Did fashion just go “hay-hoe,” or did Zac Efron just change his style? The social media realm was rocked to its core Thursday by the actor’s reveal of a new hairstyle—full-on dreadlocks.
With the scorching summer heat, Efron is going mad with fashion statements. During the Independence Day celebrations, the actor spent it by setting fireworks off by a river. But before that, he was shown to be cradling a baby goat in his arms (also on Efron IG). This year’s odd celebration for Efron, though, also included a drastic change in his hairdo.
Although most of Efron’s fans saw the post as part of his celebration of independence, many thought it was an act of cultural appropriation. Most of the comments say its a lousy advocacy to culture since Efron captioned “Just For Fun,” something that doesn’t sound right especially considering the fact that dreadlocks are commonly associated with African culture.
With over 1.2 million likes on Instagram, Efron claims to have posted this for fun and the enjoyment of doing this for effort. But with the problematic instance of using the hairstyle for cultural appropriation, the actor might not have put that in mind before posting it. It just so happens that the image was too polarized for the public to handle, although it was enough to get him through this week of independence.
Efron made no further comments about his hairstyle or the post, but it’s a big leap from his everyday look.
