Nicholas Hoult has found his next mission to join or maybe to foil. The X-Men star is set to join Tom Cruise in the next two Mission: Impossible films and he’ll reportedly be playing a villain character.
Mission: Impossible – Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie broke out the news on Thursday through an Instagram post of Hoult’s picture. In the caption, the director wrote: “Say, @nicholashoult, care to raise a little hell?” In response, Hoult reposted the picture and in the caption, he said, “Love to. Though why stop at a little? @christophermcquarrie #MI78”
Hoult will be joining a star-studded cast including Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Hayley Atwell, Shea Wingham, and Pom Klementieff. According to Variety, this wouldn’t be Hoult’s first meeting with the main star of the franchise. He was originally vying for the role of Goose’s son in Top Gun: Maverick. And although he didn’t get the role, this paved the way for him to connect with Cruise and hope to work in future projects together. In addition to that, Hoult has also worked with McQuarrie in the 2013 film Jack the Giant Slayer which McQuarrie wrote the screenplay for.
Aside from his work on X-Men as Beast, Hoult is also known for a roster of action and drama films. He was in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road and in 2013’s zombie film Warm Bodies. He also starred in the biopic Tolkien and in the 2018 awards contender The Favourite.
McQuarrie, on the other hand, previously directed the two most recent Mission: Impossible films Rogue Nation and Fallout. The latter became the franchise’s highest-grossing entry earning $791.1 million globally. Now, McQuarrie’s set to write and direct the next two upcoming films in the franchise which will reportedly be shot back to back. Paramount and Skydance set Mission: Impossible 7 to be released on July 23, 2021, while the eighth installment will be released on August 5, 2022.
