X-Men Spinoff New Mutants To Be A

Earlier this month, we’ve learned that “The Witch’s” Anya Taylor-Joy and “Game of Thrones'” Maisie Williams have been cast as Magik and Wolfsbane for “new Mutants,” the upcoming “X-Men” spinoff from 20th Century Fox. In line with this, director Josh Boone has just shared a very interesting details on what the movie is going to be like.

Taking On The Horror Genre For New Mutants

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Boone shared that he is planning on taking the horror movie genre route for “New Mutants.” He plans to take it where no other “X-Men” movie has gone before, describing it as a “full-fledged horror movie.”

“We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.” Boone reveals.

This might come as upsetting news to “X-Men” comic book fans, as the characters in “New Mutants” have never been shown without their costumes in the comics. But taking off from the source material by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, this does makes greater sense. “The Demon Bear Saga” is a comic book version of the “X-Men” saga where darker elements are shown, a rare theme for the “X-Men” films that we’ve been used to watching (save for “Logan” maybe).

“[It’s] a darker and more surreal and impressionistic X-Men series than we’d ever seen before. It felt like Stephen King meets John Hughes. We made a comic book with what our vision of the series would be. We love that Fox wants to make all these different X-Men spinoffs as drastically different as they can,” Boone continued.

Additional Cast Members for New Mutants

It was also mentioned that a couple of actors are being considered to join the potential cast. Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) is being eyed for the role of Sunspot, while Rosario Dawson has been confirmed to play Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a former X-Men with “psioplasmic bio-field” powers. Blu Hunt (The Originals) and True O’Brien (Days of Our Lives, Queen Sugar) are also being considered for the role of Mirage.

We’ll have to wait for more official announcements to see how the casting rumors would play out, and if there ever will be new developments in the coming weeks.
