Willow Star Says He Drew Inspiration from Mark Hamill in The Last Jedi

Besides Star Wars, Lucasfilm is revisiting some other IPs from Indiana Jones to this month’s Willow. What’s interesting is, Warwick Davis, who plays the now older Willow, says he drew inspiration from Mark Hamill when it came to his performance in the new series.

Talking to THR, Davis says he pretty much inspired his performance in the Willow series from Hamill’s portrayal of an older Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Davis explains:

“The one thing I took note of in particular was Mark Hamill returning to Luke Skywalker [in Star Wars: The Last Jedi] and how he went about the approach for that,” Davis tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I thought he was really interesting, and it wasn’t the expected approach, certainly. He came at it from … quite a different angle, and I also did the same. I noticed that Mark didn’t try to play the character younger. He just leaned into his more mature years, and that’s really what I did as Willow.”

Though there are a lot of fans who have complained about The Last Jedi ruining Luke, a lot of other members of the fandom think that the portrayal of a cynical Luke Skywalker is actually a pretty interesting arc for the character. He does start out grumpy in the beginning of the film, but by the end, he embraces the story of Luke Skywalker, and becomes the hero everyone deserved—not the one they were expecting.

As for Willow, the franchise is admittedly one of the more obscure when it comes to Lucasfilm, but it’s definitely worth checking out for anyone who loves action fantasy.

Willow is now streaming on Disney+.
