Will Smith may have been banned for the Oscars, but that doesn’t mean he can’t work. Just in, we have a look at Smith’s collaboration with Apple TV+ Emancipation where he plays a slave on a journey to reunite with his family. Watch this:
Here’s the official description:
A runaway slave forges through the swamps of Louisiana on a tortuous journey to escape plantation owners that nearly killed him.
The movie is directed by Antoine Fuqua who is best known for his work on Training Day and the Equalizer movies starring Denzel Washington. Since we are going to be exploring a story that takes place in the middle of a war, I think it goes without saying that we should expect some major action sequences in this film.
Besides Smith, the movie also stars Ben Foster, Mustafa Shakir, Grant Harvey, Charmaine Bingwa, David Denman, and Steven Ogg.
We’ve had several takes on the emancipation story with films like 12 Years a Slave and even a stylized one with Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. With Fuqua at the helm though, I’m expected a different kind of twist when it comes to this trope. I guess it’s also pretty interesting to know that the story of the film is based on an actual historical account. And despite all the controversy surrounding Smith, he’s still one heck of a talent.
Emancipation is set to come to Apple TV+ on Dec. 9. You can catch the film in theaters when it releases a week earlier on Dec. 2.
