‘Whiskey Cavalier’ Season 1, Episode 9 ‘Hearts and Minds’ Recap: Bonding

The life of a spy in Whiskey Cavalier is not a simple life. Often, spies do not get to celebrate holidays like regular people, so they have the Supplemental Holiday for Espionage Professionals instead. Also, missions too may take an interesting turn in a matter of minutes. When Team Whiskey’s boy scout leader falls under enemy custody, his coldhearted counterpart must take over before his heart stops– literally.
On Wednesday night’s episode of Whiskey Cavalier, Team Whiskey’s target manages to capture Will Chase (Scott Foley). Forced to take the lead, Frankie Trowbridge (Lauren Cohan) tries her best to direct the team. Meanwhile, Will continues to try to get to know Jai Datta (Vir Das) personally despite the circumstances. Also, Edgar Standish (Tyler James Williams) gets more field experience.
Internal Organ Harvesting Ring
Team Whiskey did not expect to be brought back to the field anytime soon. Their first target, Big time South East Asian Heroin Importer Ethan McElroy was reasonably easy to catch, given his health condition. What the team did not expect, however, is his link to an Internal Organ Harvesting Ring. McElroy badly needed a new heart and was in contact with them. Also, since McElroy preferred to keep a low profile, none of the criminals have seen personally. With that, the team decides to send Edgar out to disguise as McElroy when they meet the Harvesters.
Everything seemed to work in their favor; perhaps almost too good. Will found a spot to give the team cover in case the team blew their cover. Also, Jai waited outside with their getaway vehicle. Frankie, Edgar, and Susan Sampson (Ana Ortiz) disguised as McElroy and his bodyguards. They were making the exchange of money when a guard who used to work for the real McElroy almost revealed their disguises. Luckily, Will shot him before he could react. However, as Will helped Frankie, Edgar, and Susan escape, the Harvesters manage to capture him.
Forced Responsibility
Will’s sudden disappearance made Team Whiskey lose their minds. Frankie, in particular, became snappy and dismissive towards her peers, particularly to Edgar. Her combat training sessions with him mostly ended up with Edgar getting his ass handed to him. Now, Frankie felt even more pressured to deal with coordinating a group, and she neither liked or knew how to do it. Thankfully, Susan knew how to help Frankie deal with the pressure and channel her inner leader. Sure, both she and Will walked away from Edgar when he seized a grenade from the Harvesters’ escaping leader, Michael Kenner, that threatened to erase them from existence, but she generally looked out for Edgar the entire time. They are continuing the combat training sessions, too.
Life Stories
Being one of the team’s tech guys, Jai has a habit of placing listening devices on his team members. At their base, he listened to Frankie kick the shit out of Edgar while he worked on his workbench. Will, however, discouraged him from doing such things but frankly, Jai does not care. Also, Will kept bugging Jai about telling him something from his personal life, but Jai does not budge. Soon, however, Will gets his chance.
A car chase ensued immediately after Team Whiskey’s escape from the meeting place. Jai’s impeccable driving skills almost work to their advantage, but unfortunately, a truck stood in their way. Before they knew it, the Harvesters switched cars, taking Will with them. Thankfully, Will’s communicator was still on so while he stalled Kenner, Team Whiskey triangulates his location. Kenner eventually finds the communicator and taunts them before destroying it. This situation is where Jai’s listening devices came in handy. Sure, it gave them a different lead to get to Will, but it also gave Jai a headache as Will kept blabbering about his personal life.
Edgar, Frankie, and Susan pose as McElroy and his bodyguards once more, granting them entrance to the facility. Their missions are now clear: after dealing with the henchmen, Susan frees the other captives inside the facility while Edgar and Frankie rescue Will. On the other hand, the paralysis-induced Will tries and successfully injects himself with adrenaline, making him escape in time for Edgar and Frankie to reach him. Like any other day, Team Whiskey accomplishes the mission.
During the team’s after hours, Jai decides to have fun with Will. Because of making him endure the excruciating dramatic life stories, Jai makes Will listen to his story, too, at three in the morning. Complete with musical effects and Jai’s dramatized narration, Will covered his ears as Jai spoke through speakers inside Will’s apartment that Will could not turn off. It looks like Will got the bonding moment that he wanted.
‘Whiskey Cavalier’ Season 1, Episode 9 ‘Hearts and Minds’ Final Verdict
The episode had much role switching that was perfectly crafted. Having Frankie mentor, Edgar appealed both emotionally and humorously. Also, the show never really expounded on Jai and Will’s relationship up until now, which they masterfully have done. Despite how minor her dialogues are, Susan plays an essential role in the overall team dynamic, and Team Whiskey sure is lucky to have someone like her on their side.
Whiskey Cavalier continues Wednesday, May 1st with ‘Good Will Hunting’ at 10/9c on ABC.
