‘Westworld’ Season 2, Episode 6 ‘Phase Space’ Recap: Different Fates [SPOILERS]

In this week’s episode of Westworld, Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) and Elsie (Shannon Woodward) diagnose the problems on the system and find out that they have to face the CR4-DL interface personally. Charlotte (Tessa Thompson) and Ashley (Luke Hemsworth) secure the host, Peter Abernathy (Louis Herthum); enabling the call for reinforcements. Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) encounters a different Teddy (James Marsden) but is nonetheless content with what she has done as they make their move.

We are taken to a time before the host’s consciousness began. Dolores is having a conversation with Bernard. After some time, Bernard expresses his concern about Dolores. Suddenly, roles change. Dolores has Bernard freeze all motor function then she orders him to sit down. Apparently, Dolores is tasked to test Bernard for fidelity.

Daughters

Maeve (Thandie Newton) and Akane (Rinko Kikuchi) continue to mourn the loss of Sakura (Kiki Suzane) inside the ruined Shogun camp. Akane takes Sakura’s heart out, and Maeve hands her a sleeve of her dress to cover it up with. They proceed to head back to the village. Upon arrival, they meet some of Tanaka’s (Masayoshi Haneda) men. Maeve has the two of them kill each other. Tanaka comes out of the Izakaya. His men have Hanaryo (Tao Okamoto),  Musashi (Hiroyuki Sanada), Hector (Rodrigo Santoro), and Armistice (Ingrid Bolsø Berdal) as prisoners. Musashi convinces Tanaka to a duel in which he emerges as the victor, earning their freedom.

Akane, Maeve, and everyone else journey to Snow Lake, the land where Sakura grew up. The group disperses into two subgroups. Lee Simon Quarterman, Lutz (Leonardo Nam), and Sylvester (Ptolemy Slocum) look for the way back to the western park area. They find a well covered in dead host bodies, so they remove them as they fumble around for a way to open the passage. Lee simply presses a button then a hole is uncovered, leading to an underground laboratory. Lutz goes in first.

While Lee and his group were busy with their way out, Akane places Sakura’s heart on a vessel, then Hanaryo sets it on fire. Maeve tries to convince Akane and Musashi to join them. However, they insisted on staying at the Lake, saying that she will stay where her heart is. They give each other their final goodbyes and head for the passage along with Hanaryo who decided to join them.

Maeve tells Hector to wait along with everyone else. She had to head to her daughter alone. She takes it all in–the scent of the air as well as the texture of the weeds. She reaches the house, and she finds her daughter (Jasmyn Rae) playing with some dolls. She has a short conversation with her until her new mother (Erica Luttrell) welcomes Maeve. A band of Ghost Nation Native Warriors arrives, so Maeve and her daughter make a run for it. Hector sees the warriors, so he and the rest of the team proceed to counterattack. At some point, one of the Warriors stops Maeve, telling her to come with him. Maeve refuses, and she continues to run with her daughter.

Lutz notices the commotion, and he tells Sylvester and Lee to go and help them along with him. Lee brings a phone out of his pocket then he tells them that he is calling for an extraction team. Lutz does not say a word as he leaves to help the group.

Father and Daughter

Lawrence (Clifton Collins) expresses his concern over William’s daughter, Grace (Katja Herbers). William dismisses this; then Grace is finally able to catch up with his pace. At first, William thinks that Grace is a host, but she proved that she is not. Confused, William has a conversation with her. His men find a ruined carriage, so they proceed to loot it. Grace tells William that it is a trap and then she kills the men who have prepared the trap.

That night, William, Grace, Lawrence, and the men set up a camp. William continues to talk to her daughter, asking her about why she is there with them. After a while, William agrees to leave the park with his daughter and go back to face reality. The next morning, Grace wakes up and finds everyone gone, except for one host who was cooking his meal. She was frustrated to see that this had happened.

The Offensive

Dolores plays the piano at the saloon. Teddy enters, asking her when they are to leave. Dolores notices the difference in Teddy’s personality. Content with the changes made on him, she tells him that they are to leave soon. After this, they both leave the saloon. Upon reaching the train, Dolores talks to Angela (Talulah Riley) who is holding Phil (Patrick Cage II) and Benson (Greg Audino) captive. Dolores tries to have Benson reveal the location of her father. This catches Teddy’s attention. He shoots Benson and simply tells Dolores that they would find her father before he enters the train. Dolores is taken aback while Angela gives her a satisfied smirk.

The train nears its destination, so Dolores and her men leave the unnecessary coaches behind. Teddy was the last to leave. Before he left, he gave Phil a gun as well as one bullet, saying that it is the last of his mercy. Once he was off the coach, they leave it behind along with Phil inside it.

The Humans Prepare To Fight Back

Ashley takes a walk among his fallen companions. Charlotte finds him. After she uses a computer to call for help, she has him bring a constrained Peter into a secure lab. She orders some men to secure him, and their method was quite brutal. Peter struggles with the men but they overpower them. Eventually, they nail Peter to the laboratory chair.

Bernard and Elsie enter the main facility. When Elsie finds a computer, she immediately tries to figure out what is happening to the system. However, she is unable to change anything that could have helped the system be restored. Instead, she finds out the CR4-DL (pronounced as “cradle”), a server that contains all the hosts’ consciousness, is effectively preventing any attempts to rewrite its program. Bernard realizes that the only way to resolve this was to fix the CR4-DL personally.

Elsie and Bernard reach the CR4-DL. Elsie tries to use a computer to override the system. This fails, so Bernard decides to access the system through the use of his control unit. Elsie tries to stop him at first, but she realizes that there is no other way, so he lets Bernard do it. Bernard secures himself on the extraction unit. He lets out a scream of pain during the process; then once it was removed, Bernard blacked out. Bernard finds himself in the train on the way to the town. He gets off the train then he takes a look around.

Ashley heads out to the park to meet the reinforcements. He tells them about the preparations his team had made. The leader of the new group tells Ashley to get his men away from the tech, then he calls over one of his men, telling him to refer to Ashley if he needed anything from him. The team makes it to the room with the map. One of the technicians is able to bring it back online. The leader notices a red dot on the map. When he asks them what it is, they tell him that it is the train.

Elsie hears an explosion. Since it is not time yet, she approaches Bernard, wondering what he could be seeing. As Bernard continues to walk into the town, he finds familiar faces like Dolores and Teddy. When he enters Maeve’s saloon, he finds Robert (Anthony Hopkins) there, playing the piano.

Westworld continues next Sunday, June 3rd, with “Les Écorchés” at 9/8c on HBO.
