'Westeros The Series': What a Modern-day 'Game of Thrones' Would Look Like

A trailer for a modern take on “Game of Thrones” just appeared online. What if the show was set in the current age? How would the great houses of the Starks, Lannisters, and Targaryens stand up to the age of the internet? These questions have all been answered as a new trailer for a “spin-off” show called “Westeros The Series” dropped online. It’s very a convincing promo material for the show—if not for the very shocking and funny twist at the end.
We’ll spare you the details of the twist later, so here, watch it first:

In the “Westeros The Series” trailer, we can see that the Seven Kingdoms has evolved into a very progressive state. However, there’s still the presence of the same problems that the world is encountering right now: political turmoil, global warming, and war. It’s still similar to what George R.R. Martin would have written if “Game of Thrones” were set today.
It also shows themes and characters that are familiar to fans of the show albeit in a contemporary setting. There’s a huge crowd illuminated by stadium lights and probably the most interesting shot in “Westeros The Series”—windmills standing alongside the iconic statue on the gates of Braavos.

“Westeros The Series” also shows us a person with silver hair (presumed to be a Targaryen) snorting a line of cocaine while a Direwolf follows a woman in stilettos as she gets out of her car. Political strife is also seen as a main plot of the show. And towards the end of the trailer, a winged beast—let’s say, a dragon—is shown looming over what we call “Targaryen Square.”

The Noble ‘Game of Thrones’ Houses as a Modern Political Structure in ‘Westeros The Series’

“Westeros The Series” is presumably set a millennium after “Game of Thrones.” And in the trailer, it’s good to see that House Stark, Lannister, and Targaryen is still playing the game after a thousand years. What’s even more interesting is that the Lannisters are still in command of the Iron Throne, with a Prime Minister from the same house speaking against the rumors of what lies beyond the wall. As the PM speaks, the crowd roars in thunderous applause, suggesting that after all these years, the Lannisters have the power and influence to sway a large number of Westerosi citizens.

It’s also worth noting that just like how “Game of Thrones” had something in common with old England culture, “Westeros The Series” is obviously based on the current political structure of the United Kingdom. Westeros here clearly has a parliament system going on and a constitutional monarchy similar to that of today’s Great Britain. Once the frame flashes to a news clip of the Lannister PM, we can also see in the crawlers that there is indeed a Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, who is also publicly condemning all acts of terrorism.
We also see the House Stark sigil multiple times in the trailer, suggesting that the Starks still rule over the north. The looming threat of White Walkers beyond the wall is still what bothers them, apparently.

What’s up with The Wall?

“Westeros The Series” is suggesting that something crazy is happening beyond the wall again. It might be an upgraded version of the White Walkers, but it’s not entirely seen. There are a few soldiers seemingly fighting off and scared to death by an unknown threat. It almost seems as if it’s a virus a la “World War Z,” so it might be mixing themes of a viral infection to affect some people (assuming there are) beyond the Wall and turning them into zombies who’s out for Westerosi brains.
It would be an awesome plot for “Westeros The Series” to adapt the White Walker narrative in “Game of Thrones.” After a thousand years, a Night King might soon rise up (as hinted by this dude in the trailer who woke up with blue eyes) and inflict it’s terror once again.

And now for the trailer’s funny twist…

Sure, “Westeros The Series” would be an awesome story and spin-off in itself. But here’s the catch. All of this isn’t real. Some have thought that this was an expertly-done fan trailer, but it actually isn’t.
“Westeros The Series'” trailer is actually a clever attempt of Dutch TV show “Zondag met Lubach” (Sunday With Lubach) to tell its fans that Season 7 will premiere on September 10.
Watch it for yourself and bask in the glory of this year’s greatest prank yet:

“Zondag met Lubach” is a satire television show hosted by Arjen Lubach. It’s a roundup of events happening all over the world with some news collected through media fragments and research journalism.
Now tell us, how extra can you be for a TV show trailer?
Nonetheless, “Westeros The Series” looks even more addictive as “Game of Thrones.” Should the showrunners pick up the awesome idea of the spin-off, it would be a great way to fill up the space left by Season 7 of “Game of Thrones.”
Two years is a long wait.
Seriously, HBO.
What the hell.
