Welcome to Derry: IT Spinoff Series Greenlit by HBO Max

The Losers Club may have defeated Pennywise finally in the IT movies, but there’s going to be more of the sadistic clown in the future of the franchise.

As per Deadline, Welcome to Derry, a prequel series following the life of Pennywise before he ran into the Losers has been greenlit on HBO Max. IT author Stephen King had this to say about the expansion:

“I’m excited that the story of Derry, Maine’s most haunted city, is continuing, and I’m glad Andy Muschietti is going to be overseeing the frightening festivities, along with a brain trust including his talented sister, Barbara,… Red balloons all around!”

The IT movies have established that Pennywise had been terrorizing the town for a while, and details of a deleted scene put him in the town around the 1600s where he forces a woman to feed him her child, lest the rest of her family get slaughtered.

I doubt that Pennywise would start out as a clown, but it’s likely we can watch him just continue to change forms over the years until he finally decides to become Bill Skarsgård.

If anything, IT director Andy Muschietti is attached to the project, and is said to be directing some episodes. If you loved the tone of the movies, it’s very likely the prequel will deliver the very same frights.

No release date has been set for Welcome to Derry, but watch out for it on HBO Max.
