The Batman was ready to launch on a global scale this week, but it looks like the movie won’t be coming to Russia.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, WB has decided to postpone the release of The Batman in Russia because of the ongoing invasion happening in Ukraine. A WarnerMedia spokesperson wrote in a statement:
“In light of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, WarnerMedia is pausing the release of its feature film The Batman in Russia… We will continue to monitor the situation as it evolves. We hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to this tragedy.”
WB is actually following suit with Disney who has also pulled their theatrical releases from the country because of the situation with Ukraine. “We will make future business decisions based on the evolving situation. In the meantime, given the scale of the emerging refugee crisis, we are working with our NGO partners to provide urgent aid and other humanitarian assistance to refugees,” wrote Disney.
Besides The Batman, other WB films that are slated for a release in Russia in the coming months are Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore and DC’s League of Super-Pets. We don’t know how long WB will be holding out their films, but they are certainly going to be taking a hit as well, seeing that Russia has one of the biggest box office markets in the world. At least we know that the studio isn’t callous when it comes to global crises like the invasion of Ukraine.
For now, The Batman is set to come out on March 4 for the rest of the world.
