WB CEO Says New LOTR Films Could Affect Amazon's Rings of Power

The Lord of the Rings franchise hasn’t had a major presence in theaters since the Hobbit movies, but WB is looking to change that with the reports of them developing new LOTR projects.

What’s curious though, Amazon Prime Video just launched their Rings series Rings of Power based on the world of J.R.R. Tolkien, so wouldn’t there be a clash of IP with spinoff films in theaters? Apparently, WB is counting on it.

As per Variety, WB Discovery CEO David Zaslav has suggested that, ‘a move to launch new “Lord of the Rings” movies would take away some of the momentum that Amazon had enjoyed from its launch of a series based on the novels.’ So Zaslav was pretty aware that releasing new LOTR films could very much affect the spotlight that’s currently on ROP.

When Rings of Power initially launched, it actually had to compete with the first season of HBO’s House of the Dragon, which no doubt dominated the online news cycle every week. Despite this, Amazon has said that they were very pleased with the results they got from ROP, and are very committed to finish the story that the series had started out to tell.

Who knows, maybe some more Rings properties may actually add hype for the Amazon series, but I guess it will have to depend on what these movies are going to be about. Maybe Rings fans should just be happy they’re getting more content?

No release date has been set for WB’s incoming LOTR films, but you can catch Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
