Disney may own the Muppets now, but Jim Henson had a lot of other kooky creatures that lived way outside of Sesame Street. Just in, Apple TV has given fans an inside look at their Fraggle Rock revival. Watch this:
The original Fraggle Rock had premiered back in 1983 on HBO, and had run for 96 episodes across five seasons, ending in ’87. Though the show may center on colorful characters on the surface, it’s said that the very theme of the series in trying to understand the symbiotic relationships between the different ‘races’ in the series from the tiny worker doozers to the giant gorgs that catch fraggles.
The reboot is going to be bringing back original characters from the show, but they’re also going to have their own modern-day versions. It’s also worth noting that new characters will also be appearing and they’ll be voiced by celebrity guests like Daveed Diggs, Kenan Thompson, Ed Helms, Cynthia Erivo, and Patti LaBelle. Even the Foo Fighters get to appear as themselves in the show.
Though animation and creature work has evolved a great deal since the 80s, Jim Henson’s muppets still have a certain charm that manages to captivate generations of viewers. We don’t know how the new Fraggle Rock will tackle today’s societal issues with their messages, but with kids’ shows like Steven Universe and Craig of the Creek featuring LGBT themes, I’m sure this Fraggle reboot will find its voice.
