Earlier this year horror master Junji Ito had confirmed that he was teaming up with Netflix for an anthology series based on his work. The series now has a release date set for January, and we have a look at the creepy intro.
This is the opening for Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre:
Here’s the official description:
The genius Junji Ito has long been at the forefront of the Japanese horror manga world. Featuring a selection of 20 macabre masterpieces brimming with his original worldview and fascinating characters drawn in his stunning style, including popular titles such as “Hanging Balloon” and fan-favorite characters Tomie and Soichi, this animated series will totally immerse viewers in the maniacal charm of Junji Ito.
Like the description says, the series is going to be an anthology, drawing from multiple works of Ito’s manga library. Not only is Ito known for displaying some horrific, disturbing imagery on paper, but he also has a penchant for making his protagonists beautiful, delicate, young women.
It’s actually odd that Maniac could come out now, seeing that a lot of fans are still waiting on the adaptation of Ito’s most famous work Uzumaki which was said to be in production at Adult Swim even before the pandemic.
We don’t know why an adaptation of Uzumaki could be taking this long, but I’m sure there are a lot of scares to be had with Maniac. Too bad it couldn’t make a Halloween release.
Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre comes to Netflix on Jan. 19, 2023.
