Beth has been mostly a supporting character on Rick and Morty, but she got the spotlight in the last episode with herself starting an affair with Space Beth. The episode has a lot to unpack, and Adult Swim has given us a featurette delving into the episode and the message behind it all.
Watch this:
“When I think about Beth, I think she’s got so much potential to be explored in a way that’s like a younger Rick,” says show writer Anne Lane. With Space Beth essentially turning into a young Rick, there is a lot of potential for character exploration, especially since there are now two versions of Beth that live completely different lives.
It’s also interesting how the episode introduces a new ‘throuple’ dynamic with both Beths and Jerry. Though the couple of Beth and Jerry generally works, this dynamic kind of teases a possible perfection of their chemistry. Showrunner Scott Marder explains, “It actually brings the trio of Beth, Jerry, and Space Beth to a new level of like a throuple that could actually work in a way that might be better, and cleaner, and more honest than the way Beth and Jerry had been functioning on their own.”
So far the series has been exploring some interesting, high-concept episodes, and I’m all up for it—especially when it gives the spotlight to side characters like Beth. I wonder who else is going to get this character deep-dive in the rest of the season?
