Mike Flanagan has become Netflix’s go-to name for horror with shows like Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House, and now he’s teamed up with the streaming giant once again for a series called The Midnight Club.
Watch this:
At a hospice for terminally ill young adults, eight patients come together every night at midnight to tell each other stories – and make a pact that the next of them to die will give the group a sign from the beyond.
The series is said to be based on the novel from Christopher Pike from 1994 as well as some of his other works.
While Flanagan’s other series have been mostly focused on older, more adult characters, the series having a group of young adults gives me the feeling that this will have some kind of coming-of-age theme around the series—which is kind of ironic seeing that each of these characters are terminally ill; but I guess even Fault in Our Stars can have some kind of horror twist to it.
If you’re a fan of Flanagan’s work, we should also expect some kind of metaphorical theme that the series will be dancing around on. With Midnight Mass focusing on the dangers of religion, and Haunting of Hill House a metaphor for trauma, I wonder what kind of IRL horror Midnight Club will be addressing.
With Hulu just giving us a look at their Hellraiser reboot, I think this latter half of September will be all about gearing up for the Halloween season.
The Midnight Club premieres on Netflix on Oct. 7.
