After two Venom movies, Sony is ready to tell the story of another Spider-Man villain with Morbius. The film is set to come out in April, and we have a new featurette that has star Jared Leto explaining the lore of the character.
Watch this:
As Leto puts it, Morbius did start out as a villain for Spider-Man—not unlike Venom—before eventually turning to vigilantism. Besides clashing with Peter Parker, Morbius has also faced another Marvel hero in the form of vampire hunter Blade.
We don’t know exactly where Morbius stands when it comes to the Spider-Verse, but we do know that he knows about Venom, and Michael Keaton’s Vulture exists in his world as well. If anything, J.K. Simmons playing two versions of J. Jonah Jameson could mean that Keaton could be playing a version of the Vulture that still clashed with Spider-Man, but not Tom Holland’s version.
At some point, I’m expecting Sony to just sweep it under the rug and say “don’t worry about it,” but it would be great if we can have some kind of canon explanation. We’ll just have to wait and watch.
One of the most compelling and conflicted characters in Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters comes to the big screen as Oscar® winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. While at first it seems to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed. Will good override evil – or will Morbius succumb to his mysterious new urges?
Morbius is set to hit theaters on April 1.
