Baz Luhrmann is best known for his colorfully eccentric films like Moulin Rouge! and The Great Gatsby, and he’s now set to make a biopic centered on the King of Rock and Roll.
Watch the first trailer for Elvis starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks:
Here’s the official description:
The film explores the life and music of Elvis Presley (Butler), seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Hanks). The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America. Central to that journey is one of the most significant and influential people in Elvis’s life, Priscilla Presley (Olivia DeJonge).
Even if the movie is a biopic, the fact that Luhrmann is at the helm already makes me feel like we’re going to get something more visually dazzling—something closer to Rocketman than Bohemian Rhapsody. Then again, I’m just guessing. We’ll have to wait for the movie to come out to see how Luhrmann wants to tell this story.
If anything, there is a lot to be explored when it comes to Elvis, not just his own personal story, but his influence in pop culture—like the sexual revolution of the US. Luhrmann tells FilmInk, “There’s much more to say about that because obviously this film is a vast canvas, but it’s really interesting how that liberation of the younger generation was so terrifying – but it was also terrifying because of its complex relationship to race in America, we have to be really honest about that.”
Elvis is set to hit theaters on June 24.
