Watch Chihiro and Haku in Clip from Spirited Away: Live on Stage

Hayao Miyazaki’s classic Spirited Away may not need a live-action adaptation, but 2022 saw the film adapted into a theater play which ran at Tokyo’s Imperial Theatre. Though not everyone was able to catch the stage play live, you could be able to watch it at Studio Ghibli Fest 2023.

The play is set to hit North American theaters this week, and we have a new clip featuring the lead Chihiro and supporting character Haku. Check this out:

Hayao Miyazaki’s Academy Award-winning animated feature film comes to life in this first-ever stage adaptation, full of dazzling sets, captivating musical numbers, and wondrous puppets of beloved characters. Adapted and directed by Tony Award-winner John Caird (Les Misérables), two unique casts and performances were filmed during the show’s acclaimed 2022 run at Tokyo’s historic Imperial Theatre, featuring Kanna Hashimoto and Mone Kamishiraishi as Chihiro.

The live-action Spirited Away is only the cherry on top of a huge celebration of all things Ghibli. There will also be screenings for several of Miyazaki’s works including Ponyo, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, Porco Rosso, The Wind Rises, Howl’s Moving Castle, and the original animated Spirited Away.

Depending on the reception of the live-action Spirited Away, maybe we could expect a wider theatrical release sooner within the year. I mean, if Hamilton can be such a hit, what about an adaptation of one of the most beloved animated films of all time?
