Before we get to see Joaquin Phoenix romance Lady Gaga as the Joker, he’s teamed up with director Ari Aster for a movie called Beau is Afraid. The film is set to release later this month, and A24 has released a new BTS look at the making of the film.
Check this out:
Admittedly, A24 and Aster are being purposefully vague when it comes to the story of Beau is Afraid, and audiences can’t make heads or tails if this film is going to be a dramatic comedy or another horror movie.
“If you pumped a 10-year-old full of Zoloft and had him get your groceries, that’s like this movie,” says director Aster, “I wanted to make a film where it feels like you’ve been through a life—or even through a person… It’s like a Jewish Lord of the Rings, but he’s just going to his mom’s house.”
Either way, Aster is an incredibly talented director, and has managed to carve out a unique voice when it comes to the directors that have been working now. With horror movies like Hereditary and Midsommar under his belt, I’m curious to see what kind of crazy journey he has in store with Phoenix at the spotlight.
Here’s the official description:
“A paranoid man embarks on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother in this bold and ingeniously depraved new film from writer-director Ari Aster.”
Beau is Afraid comes to cinemas on April 21.
