Watch: Behind-The-Scenes Look at How They Brought Thing to Life in Wednesday

The Addams Family has had a great return to live-action thanks to the Wednesday series, but one standout character that people have been talking about is the severed, sentient hand, Thing.

Thanks to Netflix, we have a behind-the-scenes look at how Thing was brought to life onscreen, and we’re introduced to his actor Victor Dorobantu. Watch this:

Though they could have just brought Thing to screen with CG, you can see that they went through the painstaking process of having to remove 95 percent of Dorobantu’s body from the frame just so they could capture his performance as Thing. Sure, there were some shots that used CGI, but it’s interesting just how much they were committed to bringing a raw human element to the character.

Since there were no such thing as ‘hand actors’ the series also had to find someone who was just naturally expressive with their hands, hence Dorobantu who is actually a working magician. I guess the closest other job I can think of for a hand actor was in Labyrinth, when they had a juggler perform the funky crystal ball tricks for Bowie.

WEDNESDAY — starring Jenna Ortega in the title role, alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzman, Gwendoline Christie, Christina Ricci and more — is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Snap snap.

Wednesday is now streaming on Netflix.
