Watch: A New Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Making of Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

A total of three Pinocchio movies came out this year, and I guess it’s safe to say that Guillermo del Toro’s version that came out on Netflix was the best-received one. Just in, Netflix has dropped a new behind-the-scenes look at the movie, and gives some interesting insight into the idea of telling a story of a puppet with stop-motion puppets.
Check this out:
Pinocchio directors Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson break down how they achieved their vision to create the film’s stunning stop-motion animated scenes, with exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and additional insight from actor Gregory Mann (Pinocchio).
Tough Gustafson was the one with years of animation experience, the film does really well to capture the visual style of del Toro, and we have some very interesting and deep themes about death and existentialism that the Disney Pinocchio didn’t tackle.
If anything, del Toro’s take on the boy puppet is definitely a very interesting one, and the movie, though still for kids, isn’t afraid of going to very dark places, with themes about fascism and death that I’m sure children can understand.
If you ask me, it’s kind of a shame that we’re only getting one movie with this character, since Pinocchio the boy is just so fun to watch, but by the end of the movie, all the themes resonate, and you get a different notion of what it is to be a ‘real boy’ even if Pinocchio never becomes flesh and blood.
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is now screening on Netflix.
