The Walking Dead Season 7, Episode 10 Recap: Eugene Gets Fired Up in Hostiles And Calamities

Remember when Eugene was taken by Negan and his gang after that bullet-hitting-Lucille fiasco? Well, we’ve finally been given an answer to where Eugene is. After a grueling challenge posed upon Rick and his crew by his newfound allies on The Walking Dead Season 7 Episode 10.

Eugene, The Smartypants

In ‘Hostiles and Calamities, Eugene is finally brought to The Sanctuary, which is Negan’s HQ. Of course we know that Eugene is a big ball of a scaredy-cat, and so goes his entry inside The Saviors’ compound. But when he was led into the building by Laura, things take a turn for the best. Eugene initially thinks about the worst possible thing that could happen to him. And so when he was led to a room, Eugene prepares for it. But then we are greeted with an overwhelming sight: Eugene’s own cozy room complete with an old TV, some books, and a fridge with vegetables and beer. Turns out that this is to be his own permanent place.

Laura then proceeds to give Eugene a tour of the entire place. She then calls him as one of the Saviors now, which automatically makes him higher than all the workers who are given numbers (like prisoners) and forced to do the most menial physical labor. It’s evident how Laura gives Eugene the impression that he can take and do whatever he wants as he is being prepped up for an even bigger role, which we learn subsequently throughout the episode.

Eugene is then led outside to meet Negan once again, and nearly pisses his pants along the way. Negan than examines him on how he could be of valuable use to the Saviors, and Eugene then delivers the same lie he told Rick and Abraham about being a scientist for the Human Genome Project. With a very convincing blabber about science and how it can apply to controlling some of the Walkers and preventing them from rotting and falling apart, Negan is impressed. Eugene has just suggested a way to make the Walkers stronger physically by pouring liquid metal on their skins, making them an armada of armored zombies. Well, who wouldn’t want an army of Walkers right?

As a sign of gratitude, Eugene is then offered a night with one of Negan’s wives – without sex involved.

Eugene is of course a socially awkward man, and he has one of the most uncomfortable evenings an introvert could ever have – especially with women involved. He sits and plays an Atari video game and tries his best to focus on it. He has three of Negan’s wives with him. One of them, Amber, is obviously depressed and unhappy. The others, Tanya and Frankie, are more relaxed and engaging (even seeming as a bit flirtatious at one point). One of them is suddenly interested with Eugene’s play of scientific terms and prods him to show them a scientific trick involving hydrogen balloons and foam volcanoes using ordinary household items.

The next day, he’s visited by Tanya and Frankie, asking him for a huge favor. They claim that Amber wants out of the dilemma of living under Negan’s roof, and is planning to commit suicide. They ask Eugene to make something that will allow Amber to die painlessly. Eugene refuses at first, but after some persuasion by Tanya and Frankie, he eventually agrees.

Eugene then visits the common trading area to look for medical supplies that he can use to make a suicide pill. He then exercises the authority of being the newest higher-ups by simply taking what he wants and asserting his superiority over the workers. Eugene is finally evolving, though it’s unclera if he’s going to be able to stay this way in the succeeding episodes.

Dwight, The Conflicted Henchman

We continue Dwight’s confusing role in this episode where he is forced to hide the most obvious feeling that he’s been hiding from Negan. This episode actually opens with Dwight’s flashback where he discovers Fat Joey’s dead body and learning that Daryl has escaped their compound. He also finds that note that his ex wife Sherry slipped under Daryl’s door telling him to “Go now.” Dwight instantly recognizes her handwriting and keeps it a secret.

The Walking Dead Season 7, Episode 11And so Negan has his other henchmen beat up Dwight throws him in Daryl’s cell. And knowing how Negan likes to assert his ferociousness via passive-aggressive conversations, he drags out Dwight and lectures him, eventually telling him that Sherry has gone missing. He also believes that she helped Daryl escape, and orders Dwight to find her.

Dwight then has his wounds cleaned up by Dr. Carson, and proceeds to look for Sherry. His hunch takes him to their old home, but doesn’t find her there. Instead, he sees a long note left by Sherry, along with ther wedding and engagement rings. The note mainly talks about her being sick of living like the way they were and guarantees Dwight that she wont be coming back, but hopes for Dwight to leave as well.

Dwight then returns to the Sanctuary, and lies to Dr. Carson about finding and killing Sherry. Dwight finds Carson as being too prying, and then leaves.

Dr. Carson, The Human Roast

The scene then climaxes to where Eugene is led by Laura into the Furnace room. He is forced to witness one of Negan’s branding ceremonies. This time, the unfortunate victim is Dr. Carson, having been framed by Dwight with the note that Sherry left for Daryl’s escape. Negan accuses Carson of having an affair with Sherry, and is forced to confess and apologize. Negan then throws Carson in the Furnace instead of branding him. To Negan, messing with his wives is the harshest of all crimes.

Negan then looks to Eugene, saying that they’ve found a replacement for Dr. Carson.

When Tanya and Frankie goes to Eugene to collect the pill for Amber, he refuses to give them the pill, saying that the pill belongs to Negan. He figured that they were all dispensable to Negan as Dr. Carson was, and tells them that Negan would eventually find out about Amber’s suicide attempt.

After a few moments, Negan then comes knocking at Eugene’s door. The time has come for Eugene to pledge his allegiance by telling him who he really is. Without hesitation, Eugene blurts out that he’s “utterly, completely stone cold Negan.
