This past week, fans of The Walking Dead were a bit surprised to hear that Lauren Cohan’s Maggie was haphazardly written out of the narrative in the episode “Stradivarius.” Following Rick Grimes’ exit, fans were left wondering whether or not they’ll still see Maggie in the lead. But according to Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang, this is not the last that we’re hearing from Maggie.
In fact, Cohan might even make her return for the show’s 10th season.
Cohan’s Walking Dead hiatus is due to conflicting schedules with her new ABC series, Whiskey Cavalier. She stars opposite Scott Foley, with the show scheduled for a 2019 premiere. This week, her narrative was changed into some sort of an expedition mission with Jayne Atkinson’s Georgie. Tara (Alana Masterson) received a letter addressed to Jesus (Tom Payne) saying that Maggie is happy with Georgie as they build a new community.
In an interview with Comic Book, Kang revealed plans of having Maggie back into The Walking Dead‘s premise for Season 10. Nothing’s written on paper yet, but Kang remains hopeful that everything will work out.
“We will hopefully come back to Maggie’s story in season 10… Lauren and I have been texting about some things, and we’re hopefully gonna schedule a conversation, but Georgie’s group is definitely out there in the world doing some stuff, and I have some notion of what they’re up to,” Kang explained. “They may also be part of the universe in general. That’s really up to Scott, but we’ll see how it all plays out.”
The Walking Dead focused primarily on the three main communities of post-zombie-apocalypse Virginia—Alexandria, the Kingdom, and Hilltop. Other than that, though, not much is known across the neighboring states. True, we have an inkling of what’s happening over at Texas—thanks to Fear the Walking Dead—but the show hasn’t actually expanded its horizons yet.
With Maggie and Georgie embarking on a world-building mission, here’s to hoping that The Walking Dead Season 10 features an even grander storyline with Maggie at the helm of it all. “In our minds, there’s a lot of things going on in the world around our characters and the way that it intersects with our story,” Kang said.
