‘The Voice' Season 14: The Battles Premiere, Part 1 Recap [SPOILERS]

“The Voice” blind auditions are finally over! Now we move on to one of the most exciting parts of the competition—The Battle Rounds. During the first part of the battles, as Carson Daly says the words “Let the battle begin,” the singers began singing and showcasing their vocal prowess and uniqueness. Coaches Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, Alicia Keys, and Blake Shelton can use their ability to steal other contestants. So let’s find out who among the aspiring singers will continue their journey and who will not.

Team Alicia: Jamai vs. Sharane Calister

Jamai and Sharane share a similarity. Both are two-chair turners, courtesy of Kelly and Alicia. The two judges went through a lengthy discussion before they could finally choose their mentor.

Sharane focused on the technicality of her voice while Jamai was able to bring some surprises in their performance. They sang “Mercy” by Shawn Mendes. Alicia decided to keep Sharane and let go of Jamai. But all in all, they gave justice to the song, singing as if their worlds depended on it.

Team Kelly: Brynn Cartelli vs. Dylan Hartigan

Brynn and Dylan’s performance was an exciting one. The pair sang Taylor Swift’s “Ready For It.” We all know that Taylor’s songs are quite hard to imitate, but the two managed to deliver their performance excellently.

Brynn and Dylan may perform differently from each other, but there’s no doubt that they sing well together. Kelly chose Brynn, but Blake didn’t let go of the opportunity to coach Dylan.

Team Blake: JessLee vs. Kyla Jade

The song choice probably didn’t suit JessLee and Kyla’s voices. JessLee is a country singer while Kyla is an R&B artist. They didn’t perform their best shots. But Kyla Jade was able to convince Blake that she deserves to be in the next round.

Between JessLee and Kyla, Kyla is known to be the shy kind of person. But Kyla surprised the viewers with her performance, and she never held herself back. This simple change in Kyla could be the reason why her coach chose her.

Team Adam: Rayshun Lamarr vs. Tish Haynes Keys

Rayshun and Tish have a good connection. Their performance was more like of a duet rather than a battle. With the song “Sweet Thing” by Rufus and Chaka Khan, the battling pair made sure that they can move on to the next level of the competitions.

Good song choice and good choreography—these are the two elements that made their performance a lot better than the other. Adam picked Rayshun, but Kelly stole Tish!

Team Alicia: Shana Halligan vs. Christiana Danielle

Shana’s voice is heavenly, but Christiana’s sound is out of this world. They sang “Use Somebody” by Kings Of Leon. Between divine and out of this world, Alicia chose Christiana.

Team Kelly: Jackie Foster vs. D.R. King

Jackie and D.R. are two different singers. They have different styles of singing, but it didn’t hinder them to perform harmoniously. D.R. stood out with his audition, but Jackie wowed the coaches with her big ballad voice.

Blake believes that Jackie is the next Chloe Kohanski while Adam called her a discovery. Despite these praises and kind comments though, Kelly chose D.R. King. But it seems that Adam doesn’t agree with Kelly, so he decided to save Jackie with a steal.
“The Voice” continues tomorrow, March 20th at 8/7c on NBC.
