'Venom' Sequel Brings Kelly Marcel On Board as Screenwriter

After making it big in the box office, Sony’s Venom is pushing through with a sequel. It’s no doubt that the movie proved to be a hit, despite it being a standalone story and missing that Spider-Man element. But no matter how far it strays from its comic book source material, the box office clearly shows that people want more of Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock/Venom.

Variety reports that Kelly Marcel, one of the three screenwriters of the first Venom film, will return to pen the sequel’s script. It’s unclear if both Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg will be back to lend their writing prowess to the sequel, but it looks like Marcel’s addition is good enough in and of itself. Aside from penning the screenplay, Marcel will also executive produce Venom 2.

Michelle Monaghan is also set to make her return as Eddie Brock’s failed love interest (though things seems a bit open-ended as to how their relationship would go) as well as Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady, AKA Carnage. As for the director, Sony might be on a lookout for a new one since Reuben Fleischer, who helmed the first movie, was tapped to direct the sequel to Zombieland.

Venom has a total worldwide box office gross of $855.6 million, placing sixth in the top grossing films of 2018.
