Initial reviews for “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” suggests that it’s going a spectacular, sensory overloading visual masterpiece. The upcoming science fiction film is directed by Luc Besson; and is based on the French comic book series, “Valérian and Laureline” by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières.
“Valerian And The City of A Thousand Planets” stars Cara Delevigne (Suicide Squad) and Dane DeHaan (Chronicle, A Cure For Wellness) as the titular hero. It centers around the pair protecting a massive intergalactic city known as Alpha from an unknown threat to the city and ultimately, the universe.
Early Twitter Reactions To ‘Valerian’
The trailers have been suggesting a visually striking movie filled with impressive CGI and groundbreaking effects. If nothing else, “Valerian” could very well be one of this year’s best visual masterpieces. Early reactions on social media have indeed supported these claims. However, despite all the praise for the film’s visual aesthetic, some have pointed out that the story doesn’t quite jive with its visual strengths.
Dug opening sequence of #Valerian, has amazing 3D look. Flavor of FIFTH ELEMENT but not the same payoff. Luc Besson fans are gonna luv it.

mixed on Valerian, BUT: this movie is god damn SPECTACULAR to look at. if you're going to fork out extra $ for 3D, do it for this.

#Valerian: Inventive world-building and some awesomely unique set pieces. Runs out of steam eventually, but overall a fun, worthwhile romp.

These would definitely come as good news to Besson, given how he is one of the most exceptionally unique filmmakers in the last decades. The director began building a name for himself back in the 90’s with films like “La Femme Nikita” and “Leon: The Professional.” Since then, the French filmmaker has moved on to writing and producing films including “The Fifth Element,” Liam Neeson’s “Taken” series and Jason Statham’s “Transporter” films.
Besson then made a massive hit with 2014’s “Lucy,” starring Scarlett Johanson. Like “Valerian,” it was a visual masterpiece, but also lacked substance and flow in the story. It’s obvious how Besson sets himself apart by having a unique creative style when it comes to directing science fiction films what with “The Fifth Element” and “Lucy” being great-looking films, minues the hard-hitting story that some viewers are looking forward to.
While the initial reviews for “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” are coming in good, we have yet to see how the movie looks and feels like entirely once it hits theaters this July 21st.
