Fans thought they would be getting a new look at the live-action Little Mermaid at the Super Bowl, but I guess Disney wanted to wait a little longer to give the movie a proper spotlight.
Just in, we have a new promo for The Little Mermaid, and it gives us a look at Ariel(Halle Bailey), Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King), and tease for the big bad Ursula played by Melissa McCarthy:
While we get some repeated clips from the first teaser, we also have a tease for some newer scenes including Ariel’s sisters, and the Kiss the Girl sequence with Prince Eric. The tease for Ursula only comes at the very end, but we get to hear her sinister cackle as she peeks over one of her tentacles.
Personally, I was in the camp that wanted a drag queen to play the part of Ursula since the character was inspired by one (specifically Divine), but I guess Disney still wanted the movie to release in China. Either way, I think McCarthy is a good casting choice, and I hope she really hams it up in the role.
With the movie set to come out in May, hopefully we get a better look at the film sometime in March.
Here’s the official description for The Little Mermaid:
“The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.
The Little Mermaid swims into theaters on May 26.
