“Undercover High” welcomed the participants to their second take at prom. The last episode was about what people wanted to avoid. This time, it’s about something a lot of people would grovel over–Prom, a momentous one-night event in high school where it’s not weird that everyone’s so glammed up. It’s the graduation before the actual graduation.
However, the participants are torn between enjoying it and worrying about what’s going to happen once it’s over. There’s so little time left to make a difference. There’s also short time left before they have to graduate through their big revelation. However, everyone has to take it day by day. In “You Only Go To Prom Twice”, it’s all about seeing the better you.
It’s Not Prom Without The Jitters
Prom is more talked over than graduation. Promposals, dresses, dates – those are all everybody would talk about in this week’s episode in “Undercover High.” Jorge had set himself out to convince D’Andrei to go to prom. D’Andrei was struggling with his identity. Jorge saw him put up a wall and hide behind it. D’Andrei weakly reasoned out that he didn’t have enough money to rent or buy a tux. But Jorge persisted and suggested that D’Andrei bring his boyfriend. “Since you want the wall to go down and you want people to actually like notice you for you, then go with the guy,” Jorge said, but D’Andrei still leaned on the no.
In Jorge’s prom, he went with his boyfriend. “We were the first gay couple to go. So, I was just really scared and nervous about what people would say,” Jorge remembered. He explained that sexuality was a hard topic to talk about especially for high school students who are still trying to find what they want. But, he always hoped that D’Andrei would go to prom no matter who he’s with.
Meanwhile, Gloria was faced with her friend Nae’s angry side. Apparently, a student named Mar’Reonna was playing with Nae’s cousin. Nae didn’t like that. After an assembly, she followed Mar’Reonna outside and threatened to beat her up. Nae somehow got hold of Mar’Reonna’s phone, and she threw it across the hallway. Fortunately, before things could escalate, Ms. Watson, the assistant principal, broke Nae’s line of sight. Ms. Watson made her promise not to fight so she would be able to go to prom. Gloria worried about Nae’s apparent pent-up anger. Like Daniel, she needed to find a way to help her friend.
In class, Shane reached out to Ca’ttia. Ca’ttia is one of the outspoken leaders in the school. She was also one of the girls in Nikki’s after school all-girls club. In the first-ever meeting of the club, she shared her traumatic bullying experience. She told Shane that her constant thought between freshman and sophomore year was that she was going to shoot herself in the head before senior year. But now, Ca’ttia’s been standing her ground a lot. Her peers also nominated her for Prom Queen. She said, “All of that, it wouldn’t have happened if I would’ve killed myself.” Moved by her confession, Shane told her that he felt that they needed more people like her to inspire and give hope to others.
Friends to the Rescue
Before prom, Dr. Anderson the superintendent held a talk about law enforcement. When she asked if there’s anyone in the room pulled over by a cop while driving, a lot of students raised their hands including Antonio. She asked a student for the reason why he was pulled over, and he jokingly answered, “For being black.” However, the superintendent took it as a serious reason. She told the students, “You cannot control someone else’s bias. You can control what you do.” She also emphasized the serious consequences that a juvenile record holds for a student’s future.
Daniel’s worry for Antonio led him to talk to Dr. Anderson. Daniel told her that he saw great potential in Tone. He also mentioned how Tone has been trying really hard to redeem himself from his stumble. Thankfully, Dr. Anderson offered some concrete help. The school has been negotiating with all the different authorities to lessen a student’s punishment once he or she commits an offense. An offense would be held as a misdemeanor and would not automatically send the student through the court system. With a look at his records, Dr. Anderson could have someone make a letter of character and hopefully sway the authorities for Tone.
Later on, Dr. Anderson talked with Antonio himself. Dr. New told Dr. Anderson about how Tone came to her and admitted that he made some poor choices that reflected poorly on the school. It made quite the impression on the principal. In all her years, she never had a student come to her like how Tone did. “I felt like I embarrassed her as a principal just by going to jail and being arrested from her school.” Tone admitted to Dr. Anderson.
Dr. Anderson warmly offered to call the district attorney’s office and attest to Tone’s character together with Dr. New. This action drew a relieved and thankful smile on Tone’s face. When she asked him if he wanted her to be involved in his problems to that scale, he answered with a definite “I would love that.”. But, one thing that Dr. Anderson wanted Tone to promise her was that he had a plan after graduation and after the court. She wanted Tone’s word that he’d put this problem behind him and start fresh. Tone told her that he always wanted to be a psychologist or a firefighter. He’s going to test out the waters in college then if it’s not his boat to float, he’ll try the firefighting academy. Behind the scenes, Tone said that this talk was his way of getting his head straight and opening his eyes to the presence of people who were there and willing to help.
Meanwhile, Jorge and D’Andrei had a heart to heart talk slash outing. D’Andrei admitted that he cut people off whenever he had a problem. It was something Jorge had already noticed, and he wondered why. D’Andrei explained that when he came out to his mom, she asked him why when it was against the bible and all that. D’Andrei answered, “Honestly mom, I’m just on a quest for love.” But even until now, he was still afraid whenever he was with his friends. However, he began opening up about himself and his romantic relationships. When the college applications arrived at his house, D’Andrei surprised himself by writing down that he was bisexual in the “describe yourself” portion. It made Jorge very proud of D’Andrei. He happily told D’Andrei, “You know what, I don’t care. It’s time for me to be myself and love myself and just enjoy the life that you know, [I] was blessed with.” Jorge said that it didn’t matter who D’Andrei goes with to prom. He just had to have fun.
On the other hand, Erin and Michelle went dress shopping. Erin knew prom was expensive and Michelle only had a minimum budget. So, she took Michelle dress shopping to Silver Sparkle. Silver Sparkle is an organization that helps out teen girls by giving prom dresses away for free. Both girls picked a dozen dresses each before going into the fitting room to try it on. When Michelle came out in an adorable pink dress, they all knew it was the one. Erin was hoping that prom would help Michelle take some stress out of her mind because after all, it could be her last chance to be a teenager.
Undercover partners
Shane invited Nikki out to “talk.” And without hesitation, Shane threw the cat out of the bag. He had suspected that she was one of the “Undercover High” adults ever since she met him for her club announcement. “She seemed too mature. She was speaking eloquently, and it just clicked.” he reasoned. Now that they both knew they were both participants in “Undercover High,” Shane got to the other point of the talk. Both of them admitted to being pressured to go with a teen to prom by their high school friends but, both of them were subtly rejecting the ideas. Shane indirectly asked Nikki if she wanted to go with him. After a heart-stopping “Yeah. No.”, Nikki gladly agreed. She was relieved. “Just to see like, another person that’s an adult, that’s going through the same thing, which can relate to me, I was like, Oh my gosh thank goodness you’re here.” Nikki breathed.
Gloria and Nae also went on a date for a girl’s day. As they were getting pedicures and a massage, the girls talked about prom. Gloria thinks that once Nae receives pampered and feels beautiful, it’ll benefit her in a lot of ways. She was trying to keep in line with Dr. New’s advice to stay involved and connected to Nae’s life to help her. At that moment, Nae said she didn’t want to fight Mar’Reonna anymore and that she’s trying to change her life. Gloria was proud because it was a sign that Nae was moving forward from that part of her life.
Going back to the topic of prom, Gloria mistakenly bought a dress that gave up her high school disguise. So to keep it up, she had her mom send her her old prom dress. Gloria then decided and was determined to fit the new dress on Nae. Nae came out of the dressing room and astonished the girls. “When she comes out, she looks amazing. She just looked very elegant, and she just looked beautiful.” Gloria gushed. “Nae is growing up to be a beautiful woman, and she’s seen it in herself which is very important to teenagers today.”
“Undercover High” Joins Prom Night
Shane arrived early at Nikki’s house like a proper gentleman bearing flowers. As both of them prepared, Nikki retold her sad prom experience. She was pregnant that time, and her date was the baby’s father. However, he didn’t even bother showing up. Nikki broke down and went home. Upon hearing her tragic prom tale, Shane grew determined to make it a truly unforgettable night for Nikki for all the right reasons. Dr. New was also early at the school to formally greet everyone at the doors. She also made sure to take a sniff of each breath, making sure that no one has started the party too early.
Alijah blew the night away. Jorge said so. He said that she wasn’t a girl who typically wears gowns or dresses and to see her walking with confidence was very exciting. Jorge also saw D’Andrei comfortably and genuinely killing the dance floor and being himself. It meant a lot to Jorge to see him confident and comfortable in his skin. “I just wanna be solo today. You know, have fun best by myself,” D’Andrei told one of the producers. “ So that way I can dance and not worry about impressing anybody. But don’t worry, Imma go out there and kill the dance floor.”
Ca’ttia won the crown for prom queen but there were more than a dozen queens that night. Nae was one of these queens whom Gloria was glad to experience prom with. Gloria was excited about the new woman this night had caused to bloom in her friend. She said, “Because when a woman has the opportunity to feel beautiful, they walk beautiful, they talk beautifully.” Even Nae said she enjoyed it even though she expected that she wouldn’t. “This is what life should be like for her,” Ms. Watson said. “She let go of that drama and look where she’s at.”
Nothing could compare however to how big, how sincere, and how happy everybody’s smiles were. It’s the longest time everyone’s ever smiled this way in “Undercover High.” However, prom is like the great party before the head-splitting hangover where someone’s regretting all their decisions in life for the “Undercover High” participants. Everyone’s afraid of how their closest friends and the other students would react to their big revelation. It’s happening and it’s coming at them like a rollercoaster.
In the finale of “Undercover High,” there will no longer be any secrets and undercover adults. It’s time to step on the minefield of ice. Each participant will be given a chance to have one on one confessions with the people they’ve grown closest to. But, after that, they’ll be facing the whole student body in the school assembly. As Gloria said, it would be like judgment day for them. But, nothing beats the power and hope in Dr. Anderson’s voice when she said: “We are making history!”
“Undercover High” unveils the season finale on Tuesday, March 20th, with “Undercover No More” at 10/9c on A&E.
