TV REVIEW: Rush’s “You Spin Me Round” Has Rush Spinning in Circles for his Ex
Will Rush spins sadly out of control in this one mainly because of long lost love, Sarah. Rush carries a heavy torch for the great love of his life and when he runs into her at a medical conference, he spends much of the episode trying to get back into her heart.
Rush at his best is charming, funny, and screwed up, but not a tragic figure. In “You Spin Me Round” he’s pretty sad, desperate, and yes, tragic. The series ups it a couple of notches by giving us a hero who’s more than the flippant doctor we first met. He has actual layers, many, many layers of daddy issues, substance abuse issues, and love issues. Let’s take a look at some of the layers that Rush beefcake.
Rush Flirts with his Ex
Rush makes a date with Alex to attend a medical conference but medicine is not the priority. Getting drunk and having some bro-time is. Rush and Alex stroll in to the Hotel Middle Class, no valet parking. Rush almost wets himself with having to park it himself. Who is there? Sarah, of course.
She sees him immediately because he’s pretty noticeable. “How did you know I’d be here?” she accuses.
“Easy, Conceited. I didn’t know you’d be here.” Yes, he’s charming even when he’s so obviously thrilled to see her.
Sarah skates off quickly, a little flustered. We find out soon enough that Sarah is there with a new beau – Griffin, a doctor who is speaking at this less than prestigious soiree. Rush spends the rest of the night pursuing Sarah in one way or another and the bromance is over as Alex is officially ditched.
Sarah-pursuing time is interrupted with a call from Eve that she has a patient for him in the hotel. It’s a senator who has a big debate that night and he has ALS. His wife wants him to get treatment to lessen the symptoms so they can keep the illness a secret. He ends up refusing treatment, for now.
Later, the senator calls for Rush again rethinking the no treatment vow. He gives him some pills that will take care of the shakes, with a “take them or not.”
Rush is back on the Sarah trail, calling her but getting Griffin on the line instead. You see those Rush wheels turning as he asks, “Wanna get a drink?” They hit the bottle and super doc goes at it pretty hard right before his big speech. Keynote wants to be more free and easy like Rush, so he jumps off the balcony into the hotel pool and is knocked out. Will jumps off to save him and with one quick pound on the chest does just that. Whew, has Rush lost a patient yet? The new buddies get arrested for violating “hotel policy.” First, no valet and now a crazy no jumping into the pool rule? This place is a real buzz kill. Alex comes to the bailout rescue, but more on that in a minute.
Later, we see the Senator on TV at the big debate. Will watches expectantly for the confession that doesn’t come. Rush is disappointed. We’re disappointed. Our sad doc gives him more of the drug to hide the side effects. The senator does have a moral compass after all. He says he did it for his wife. She deserves happiness even if it doesn’t include him. That’s somethin’ to chew on Rush.
In the final scene of the night, Sarah is saying goodbye to her former (?) love. “You are like a vortex, like a storm system. You suck people in.”
Rush says, “I like him.” He has to clarify a little with “I don’t hate him. If he makes you happy, then go for it.”
She says thank you, adding that she knows he went to see his father for Alex and how hard that must have been. There’s a quick goodbye and that’s it. Sarah admitting she’s impressed without actually saying it tells me volumes. Oh, she’ll be back.
Alex Flirts with Disaster
Alex is at a boring lecture after the Rush dump and meets a beautiful doctor. They go for a drink and she asks if he has any weed. He finds Rush and of course the good doctor has an ample supply. Thank you, Manny.
They smoke pot on the grounds, or actually he’s smoking it. The next scene shows them in robes half naked with bathing suits on underneath. He says thank you for an amazing day, goodbye. She invites him in for sexy time after hubby calls saying he’s okay with it.
Alex knows his better half isn’t going to be so accommodating. “I’m married and I really love my wife.” She counters with “I really love my husband…it’s just tonight.” They kiss with Alex succombing to desire. Thank goodness Rush got in trouble (who thought we’d ever say that). He interrupts the kissy face time with a phone call asking Alex to bail he and Griffin out of jail.
Alex leaves early to return home and confides that Rush was at the conference; we’ve been hanging out behind your back. She says it’s okay, thank you for being honest.
What did you think of sad Rush? Do you want Sarah to give him another chance or is he better off without her?
Let’s meet back here next week to discuss all things Rush. The previews look like more trouble is on the way for our favorite troubled doc who seems to be spinning further out of control.
Random Notes
The beginning of this eppy had Rush on a call bizarre even by Rush standards. He’s walking down an Eyes Wide Shut kinky hallway met by a dominatrix with a Hannibal Lecter meets Bane guy in whitey tighties whose heart has stopped and is strapped to a table. Rush gets it going again.
“When your pacemaker starts screaming its safe word, you gotta start listening.” Hilarious.
Eve’s bad ex boyfriend JP seems intent on getting her back. He calls Eve asking if she got the flowers. Creepy music plays, so we know he’s still bad news. She says she threw them away. “Do you think someone will accept you the way I do once they find out who you used to be.” Nice.
Eve makes a love connection with Lucas, the assistant she almost hooked up with. She gets flowers from him and we can revel in the fact that one person ended up happy in this one.
