TV REVIEW: The Originals Season 2 Premiere

Leaves are falling, the air is a bit crisper, and all around girls aged 18-28 are saying “Grande soy pumpkin spice latte, hold the whipped cream.” It must mean Fall has suddenly arrived and we are about to pull out our boots, oversized sweaters, and make up every excuse in the book not the leave the house. But Fall means more than pumpkins and last minute Halloween costumes, it also means television is bursting with new episodes of our favorite shows!
Monday night marked the first episode of Season Two of The Originals and I spent most of the time thinking about what would happen if my spirit were pulled from The Other Side and forced into the body of an angsty human teenager. It would be the worst. Worrying about homework, prom, and college applications. Don’t make me relive all of that! Thankfully in the world of New Orleans, teens don’t go to school and instead practice witchcraft and make friends with vampires! But before I go on and on about the possessed body of an angst-ridden werewolf human, we have to talk about everything else that happened on this week’s season premiere entitled “Rebirth.”
There was nothing more exciting than hearing Rebekah’s voice sooth our souls as she told baby Hope the story of Klaus and his fallen empire. As Rebekah recounted the tale, we were reintroduced to all the mayhem that had transpired in New Orleans. Not only had the Guerrera family taken hold of the reins in the French Quarter, but they were also equipped with moonlight rings that weakened Klaus every full moon and were receiving help from a mysterious teenage witched named “Cassie” and her older companion who followed her around like a lapdog, AKA Mama Original and Finn.
Instead of immediately fighting for his power back, Klaus had become a recluse in his own compound, starring at walls and throwing around blank canvases in anger. Elijah wasn’t forging much of a different path as he mourned the loss of Hope and grew some very impressive facial hair.
Across the lake, Marcel was having many shirtless hugs with Cami. Although she claimed to want no strings attached, their chemistry was still undeniable. As neither of them had heard from Klaus in months, Marcel took it upon himself to start rebuilding his vampire army with the help of Josh.
Davina had spent her months hanging out at a record store, ogling the new hottie in town, and buying Icelandic folk music for Mikael, who was still holed up in her Church attic whining about his purpose in life. Why she didn’t introduce him to some Dave Matthews Band or Dashboard Confessional is beyond me. It would have better suited his mood.
Hayley, still living in the bayou, wasn’t having an easy transition into the hybrid life as she had spent her months grieving by traipsing around in wolf form and stealing unmentionables off clotheslines from the locals.
The fight against the Guerrera’s was brewing, though. Klaus appealed to Marcel and the record store owner to help take back New Orleans and they obliged only for the record store owner to turn around and sell them out to the Guerrera’s moments later. I guess he was tired of getting hassled by wolves at his place of employment and thought double-crossing Marcel and Klaus would end his troubles?
The epic showdown found all our “heroes,” even Cami, joining in the fight against the mobster family as Elijah, Hayley, and Marcel fought to destroy every ring that was bound to Klaus’s power. Klaus even joined in on the fun as wolves tried attacking him at the compound, finally getting that perfect shade of blood he had been searching for to begin painting again.
Hayley of all people was the asset to take down Francesca as the leader of the Guerrera clan fled after being flawlessly ousted from her house by Elijah. Although Hayley’s actions were necessary steps to ensure Hope’s future in New Orleans, she was still conflicted and hurting over the murder of a person. She and Klaus shared a moment as they bonded over the loss of their child and surviving through the pain.
Davina hadn’t participated in the grand fight; she was too busy buying Mikael more record albums and still stuck on destroying Klaus, only to find the store closed. A mysterious, British teen approached her. He had an affinity for music and his name started with the letter ‘K.’ He and Davina flirted up a storm before he returned home to his mother and his brother, complimenting the good looking body he was forced into. Kol, we’ve missed you.
Things we need to discuss:
- The quick turn around on the Guerrera storyline was a treat. It was quick, epic, and opened up much more interesting stories for the season.
- Although Cami decided to put a cease and desist order on her and Marcel’s shirtless hugging, how long will she really stay away? Especially now that she’s in unknown cahoots with Finn and Esther.
- Do you think Klaus painted a blood pony? I hope he painted a blood pony.
- How surprised were you when Kaleb was revealed to be Kol? How long until they all get their respected bodies back?
- Can Elijah never shave his scruff?
