TV REVIEW: The Originals “Every Mother’s Son”

I like to sit and imagine what Esther was doing in her downtime while stuck in the body of a teenage witch. Did she write emotional poetry on Tumblr while listening to Taylor Swift? Did she sit online and tweet at Justin Bieber constantly to follow her? Raid the Homecoming section of Forever 21? I don’t know, this is all speculation; she very well could have just been making up more spells to kill her children while catching up with The OC on Netflix.
Anyway, this week Esther decided it was time to have a nice sit down dinner with her sons (minus Koleb for some reason. Too busy out on another date with Davina the Teenage Witch I guess) and invited them by literally cooking them a feast, using her best calligraphy, and telling them they would be dining at the Klaus/Elijah compound. I’m not sure if they just stashed the feast she made for a few hours or prepared a whole new one of their own, but they seemed much more concerned with which wine they would be serving. Hayley was to help rid of Esther in anyway that she could while the brothers dined with their teenage mother.
Klaus remembered the good times with mommy dearest as he flashed back to Viking times when they were all human children. Esther seemed to dote on Klaus protectively and Finn’s look of disdain for his mother’s child preference was evident. Not only did Esther dote on Klaus, but she gave him a protective bird necklace, as birds were very sacred to the Vikings to find land.
Elsewhere, Marcel was eager to gain Elijah’s trust and help. He saddled Elijah with the task of helping a baby vampire acclimate to her new life. Elijah, though, wanted to do anything else than help some newly turned vampire, but took her anyway to recruit a witch to help him with warding off Esther and to procure a venomous snake. Unfortunately, Finncent was right on Elijah’s tail and kidnapped said witch to keep one step ahead.
Although Klaus and Elijah were on guard, they allowed the dinner party to proceed. Both brothers looked perplexed as Finncent made his entrance and started throwing jabs at their personalities; it didn’t take long before Klaus recognized him as Finn. Finncent made sure to tout that he and Kol were both back and serving Esther proudly. Esther finally showed and demanded respect from her sons.
Hayley was busy retrieving their witch and keeping her safe so she could perform a spell that would mark whichever body Esther were to jump into next. The witch was hesitant as she confessed the love Esther had for her children was still strong, proceeding with the spell and maiming a snake.
“You are the author of everything I am,” Klaus shouted at Esther. It was true as no matter how much pain, suffering, and horrible deeds Klaus had bestowed, Esther was the reason her children were monsters. A fact she continuously tried to brush off. In the midst of the argument, Esther found her chance and jumped bodies, leaving a confused teenaged witch and a now possessed witch in front of Hayley’s very eyes.
Esther made sure to manipulate Hayley as quickly as she could, offering her a new start in a new body that would strip her of her hybridism and allow her to start over. Klaus and Elijah rushed to Hayley’s rescue only to be given the same opportunity and to be attacked by a hoard of flying birds.
Elijah took the night’s events as a lesson to be kinder to Marcel and his new heard of baby vampires, Hayley pondered her options, and new-bodied Esther made sure to relay her detailed plan of destruction to Finncent.
Things we need to discuss:
- Esther’s inability to love her children for who they are. She has done everything to destroy their lives and her excuse for loving her children is tired. She is trying to undo her mistake and in her wake causes even more destruction.
- Although I love the new actors and their take on the Original family (Vincent shines), I still feel disconnected from the characters when they aren’t in their original bodies. It’s a fun twist for the time being, but I’m all for the original actors reprising their roles and getting proper face-to-face’s.
- Did anyone care to mention Rebekah?
- Esther should have just given Klaus a Technicolor Dreamcoat and called it a day.
