TV REVIEW: Grey's Anatomy

The latest episode of Grey’s Anatomy is lighthearted and funny, complete with a few of those signature emotional feels.  It shows all of our favorite docs back to where we like them. Meredith and Yang kiss and make up, Meredith and Derek kiss and make up, Calzona’s going strong, April and Jackson are married, and Jo and Alex fake break up.

It was a couple centric episode with the hospital board laying down the law, proclaiming a no fraternization policy. Do they not realize that this is Grey’s where pants come off as often as scalpels come out? They say “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away?”  All the docs say in unison, “No way!”

Let’s look at Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Yang (Sandra Oh) first.  They are back braiding each other’s hair, telling secrets, and giggling about boys.  Derek is out of town for another little interview with the White House.  Cristina and Meredith have a slumber party with wine…a lot of wine. The two are besties with Yang saying she wants Owen to be happy. She admits that they’re really over…the window is closed.  Don’t be sad, Yang.  You’ve still got Mer.

Now on to Meredith and Derek (Patrick Dempsey). They are still fighting about his possible job appointment by the president. Don’t worry, it’s just cute fighting. Meredith, always so mature, is withholding sex. Derek does everything to pacify her, clean, cook, apologize incessantly. By episode’s end, Derek ends up getting the big job and a little Meredith Grey as well.  Mer gives in, saying, “Presidential appointments are sexy.”  Voila, our super couple is intact so to speak.

The cute continues on with Callie (Sara Ramirez) proposing to Arizona (Jessica Capshaw)  They are so happy they feel bad for all the other yucky, less fortunate couples.  Arizona is the blushing bride-to-be showing her ring to anyone who feigns interest. It’s been a long journey, but it appears they’ve made it back.

The cuteness keeps on a rolling with April (Sarah Drew) and Jackson (Jesse Williams)really married but doing their best to hide it.  Jackson wants to go public, but April says, “I like our secret little marriage bubble. Sneaking around is sexy.” He says she’s sexy, so she relents, and they decide to start telling people. A good person to begin with would be Richard Webber. Perhaps when he walked in on a naked Jackson and April in a dispensing closet. Oops.  That’s not all Webber sees…more on that in a minute.

Next up…Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) and Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington).  They seem to be in the most danger of breaking up because she’s just an intern.  Jo confronts Alex in front of everyone. In typical Karev fashion, he unceremoniously dumps her. She cries and goes to the stairwell, stopping to answer her phone.  It’s Karev asking “How was that?”  Haha! They faked it. Girl, I knew those fake tears would come in handy.   Alex calls B.S. on the new policy taking his girl in a supply closet.  The same closet that Jackson and April are “occupying.”  The look on Webber’s face when he sees the occupants in the overcrowded closet is priceless.

One couple I didn’t even know I missed until tonight is Cristina and Owen (Kevin McKidd).  Dr. Hunt is planning to play house with his hot girlfriend doctor, Emma.  That is until Cristina shows up drunk and bearing wine at his little metal home.  They talk, mainly about window valances, kiss, drink, kiss some more, and then finally rock the trailer.  By episode’s end, Owen has put the brakes on the house hunting with Emma, then on their relationship altogether, saying she’d give up surgery for a family with kids.  Ew, gross.  Wait a minute, Owen.  Didn’t you break up with Cristina because she wouldn’t do that?  It will be interesting to see where this goes.  With Sandra Oh on the way out at season’s end, it can’t be going far.

Another couple who seems fully rejuvenated is Miranda (Chandra Wilson) and Ben (Jason George).  They are off the charts with cuteness.  Ben confides in his wife that he’s having a hard time fitting in with the much younger interns. Apparently, his cuteness cannot be resisted.  The interns eventually ask Bailey if her husband can come out to play, inviting him to Joe’s.

There were two medical cases of the week with one providing the tear jerking moment of the hour. Rory is a sixteen-year-old girl who’s had three cancers in her short life.  Alex and Callie discover she now has an aggressive tumor unrelated to her other cancers.  Turns out the young girl has a rare gene mutation that makes her susceptible to cancer.  Webber puts the interns on the case to research every person who has the gene.

Speaking of the interns, they fight most of the episode with Jo especially mad at Stephanie for bringing her claim to HR and basically trying to put an end to her sexy time with Karev.  Yes, I’d be pissed too Jo.  Well, it turns out it was Leah who filed the claim, bitter over Arizona’s love her and leave her treatment.  The young ‘uns finally bond together coming up with a brilliant plan to save Rory. They storm through the hospital excited to tell Alex and Webber about their plan.  It’s a heartbreaking scene when Karev tells them that the teen bled out and died.

The other case is a crazy one featuring a sad, pathetic crazy college professor, Lisa, who’s obsessing over a fellow professor…a very married co-worker who won’t acknowledge her in public.  The woman is trapped in a garbage chute for a couple of days, rotting her leg into a mass of flesh and bone.  April even digs a prawn out of it.  Pathetic Prof doesn’t seem phased; she just wants to know if Cheating Prof has tried to contact her.  Enough said.

“You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away” makes it impossible for us to hide our love for this veteran show.  Grey’s gives us the cutest episode of the season highlighting all of its couples…the only thing missing was an official cute-off to crown top couple of the night.  Things won’t remain all warm and fuzzy.  This is Grey’s after all.  Next week’s promo shows turmoil in Calzonaland. Arizona seems a wee bit upset over Leah’s accusations. Callie is equally unamused.  Enough thoughts about trouble in paradise.  There’s plenty of time for that in the weeks to come.  No, tonight I’m basking in all the cute glory of the couples.
