TV REVIEW: Double-crossed in Agents of SHIELD’s “Scars”

This week on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., we took a little look at what a battle between SHIELD and the Inhumans might look like in an episode about how the past can never fully be erased.

“Scars” opens with a flashback to reveal Theta Protocol. It turns out that it is a helicarrier, which definitely isn’t as exciting as I was hoping for, but I guess it makes sense to those who have seen Avengers: Age of Ultron. (There were several other similar tie-ins but they were lost on me since I haven’t seen the film.) Coulson shares Theta Protocol with the rest of SHIELD and it’s the first real sign that they might be able to work things out.

Back at Afterlife, Raina is still plagued by powerful visions, but says she can’t tell the difference between premonitions and dreams. She tells Gordon about one in particular that has to do with a stone that changes from solid to liquid. It turns out to be a powerful object that could destroy them, of course. They go in search of it and find it with SHIELD. In return, SHIELD tracks their presence and finds the location of Afterlife.

They talk together about going in and meeting the Inhumans. Skye has mixed feelings about it, but manages to talk her mother and Cal into meeting with them and trying to make it as peaceful as possible. We learn that SHIELD basically wants to catalog all Inhumans in a database so they can keep track of them if they start using their powers for evil. Call me crazy, but that probably won’t go over well.

We also get a little side mission with Bobbi and May who are making a surprise landing in the middle of nowhere. Bobbi comments on this strange landing location when May turns into Agent 33. This was probably the biggest twist all season, as I completely forgot she could do that. Dang it! When they land, Bobbi looks around and is suddenly shot by none other than Ward. Luckily he just knocked her out, but he teases that her death is coming in the near future.

When we return to Afterlife, Skye is back with her parents and they are preparing for SHIELD’s arrival. They decide to hand Cal over to them while Jiaying talks to Coulson, but SHIELD decides to send Gonzalez instead. Gonzalez and Jiaying talk and everything seems calm and civilized at until Jiaying makes a speech about the difference between SHIELD and the Inhumans. She uses a piece of the diviner to turn him into stone, killing him. She then shoots herself to make it look like it was a fair fight.

All I can say is that I am so glad Coulson wasn’t the one to go in there. This whole battle between SHIELD and the Inhuman just got a lot more complicated and I honestly can’t decide whose side I’m on. This show is truly showing that no matter what side you’re on, there are going to be good people and bad people.

I guess who will just have to wait and see who makes it out of this one alive in next week’s two hour finale! My one wish is that Ward somehow redeems himself! Am I the only one still caught up on this? Probably.
