TV REVIEW: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Yes Men: At Least We’re in the Dark Together

The heavily promoted and anticipated Thor crossover instalment of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. aired last night. The episode brought Asgardian warrior Lady Sif (Jamie Alexander) to Earth to help the gang ward off Lorelei (played by Elena Satine), a sorceress who can control men with her voice and touch.

The episode opens with Lorelei on the prowl to find an army to help her take control of… Earth? It isn’t clear exactly want she wants, but she does seek power. Lorelei begins with a motorcycle gang but they only provide her with paper money and guns, both of which she is unimpressed with.

Lady Sif shows up to help SHIELD find Lorelei, but as soon as they get to her, she uses her powers on Agent Ward. Ward has absolutely no defence against her particular charm, and it was kind of hilarious watching him fawn over her because it is SO unlike his character to act in such a vulnerable manner. Lorelei demands that Ward takes her someplace she can rule, and for some reason he takes her to Las Vegas. I might be missing something, but this seems like a really lame place to “rule.”

Lorelei confides in Ward that she knows Lady Sif will never give up chasing her. Ward decides it’s best for them to just go after her and eliminate the threat all together. Of course they spend the night together before going after SHIELD.

Back on the plane, Lady Sif gives the gang the low down on Lorelei. Apparently she was imprisoned for centuries thanks to a necklace/face cage that prevented her from talking. Lady Sif brought this device with her to help ensnare her once more, but it’s broken. Just as Fitz delivers the repaired necklace, he turns on Lady Sif and locks her into a chamber. Lorelei is now controlling Fitz as well, and Ward has taken over the plane.

Coulson manages to stay clear of Lorelei, which makes it possible for him to help Simmons and Skye. In the end, they are able to trap Lorlei and Lady Sif returns her to Asgard. Of course there is some drama along the way. May discovers that Ward could actually be in love with someone else (Skye perhaps…?) and Coulson finally comes clean to Skye about where her cure came from (an Alien!?).

Once all the fighting is over and done with, Coulson vows to Skye that they will find out the ramifications of the miracle drug, but just as he is telling her, the camera zooms out and we see that May is listening in. She immediately uses a secret phone to call someone and tell him or her that “Coulson knows.” Is she talking to Fury? What is happening to our team?

This episode was awesome in the fact that it included some pretty kick ass female characters, but it is still falling flat in almost every other area. There didn’t seem to be any real reason for Lorelei’s visit to Earth. Yes she wanted to rule over something, but it wasn’t really explained. She seemed like a smart villain but she didn’t really have a plan. I also couldn’t help but giggle when Coulson admitted that the drug was from an alien. I immediately pictured the aliens from The X-Files. Just me? Besides, didn’t they consider Thor an alien too? That doesn’t seem too threatening, right? Either way I’m not sure what to expect next week. Whose side is May on? What are the side effects of this drug? Where is director Fury? Will we ever get any real answers? I guess we’ll just have to wait till next week to find out. Like Coulson says, “At least we’re all in the dark together.”
