Whiplash actor Miles Teller is set for the role of Anthony Edward’s son in Top Gun: Maverick. According to Variety, Teller has been tapped to star as Goose’s son in the Top Gun sequel, coming summer 2019.
Teller beat out a lot of young stars during the casting for the sequel, and those include Nicholas Hoult and Glen Powell. With the other cast members soon to be announced, Teller joins Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer for the sequel to Tony Scott’s 1986 action blockbuster hit.
Top Gun: Maverick will also feature the transformation of characters from the original movie, such as Cruise’s aviator Pete “Maverick” Mitchell now a mentor for the new generation of U.S. Navy fighter pilots.
Joseph Kosinski will be directing the film with the screenplay written by Eric Warren Singer, Justin Marks, and Peter Craig. The sequel will open in theaters on July 12, 2019. Top Gun 2 was already a project in development by Scott way before his death in 2012.
Jerry Bruckheimer is producing alongside David Ellison for Skydance. Aside from starring in the sequel, Cruise also serves as a producer. Further details about the sequel are still kept under wraps.
Top Gun has been known for its original take on its very own genre. It garnered awards for its story featuring the life of fighter pilots and struggles with everyday challenges as they go through the flight academy.
