Netflix may be working on a stop-motion animated adaptation of Pinocchio will Guillermo del Toro, but Disney is going the live-action route when it comes to the story of the boy puppet.
Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we have our first look at Pinocchio as well as his ‘father’ Geppetto played by Tom Hanks. Check this out:
While we’ve seen several versions of Hanks over the years (six in Cloud Atlas alone), it’s the puppet that everyone is looking at, since it’s the very spitting image of Disney’s animated Pinocchio from the 1940 film. We don’t know what it will look like when it starts moving, but hopefully Robert Zemeckis has updated his CG puppet work since Welcome to Marwen.
Besides Hanks, the movie also includes Cynthia Erivo as the Blue Fairy with Keegan-Michael Key as ‘Honest’ John. Luke Evans has been cast as The Coachman with Loraine Bracco playing a new character Sofia the Seagull. Let’s also not forget Jiminy Cricket who will be voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
While del Toro’s animated Pinocchio is expected to embrace all the darker parts of the original story—like Pinocchio burning his feet off and killing Jiminy Cricket—this Disney adaptation is expected to be more or less the same as the animated one—fun for the whole family.
No specific release date has been announced for Disney’s Pinocchio, but the movie is set to hit Disney+ sometime in September. Del Toro’s Pinocchio comes to Netflix this December.
