He’s known for outrageous stunts and a perfect running form, now he’s taking it a step further—to space, that is. Tom Cruise has been confirmed to shoot a movie aboard the NASA International Space Station soon.
Earlier this week, the actor teamed up with SpaceX founder Elon Musk for a film project with NASA, one that’s shot in space. Now, it looks like the negotiations bore fruit as it’s now a done deal. Cruise’s upcoming movie will be the first film production ever to be filmed in space, one that’s for the history books.
NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine expressed excitement over the project on Twitter. “NASA is excited to work with Tom Cruise on a film aboard the Space Station,” Bridenstine wrote. “We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make NASA’s ambitious plans a reality.”
The movie, however, is not a Mission: Impossible franchise entry. True, Cruise did break his ankle while jumping off a building for Fallout, hung onto the side of a plane mid takeoff for Rogue Nation, and rappeled on the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, but as likely as a Mission: Impossible movie shot in space sounds, the project remains to be untitled as of yet.
Meanwhile, filming for Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 were promptly halted earlier this year following coronavirus threats. Despite the production shutdown, the 7th MI installment is still slated for theatrical release on November 19, 2021.
Cruise will be seen in this year’s sequel to Top Gun, titled Top Gun: Maverick. The premiere date was moved from June 24 to December 23.
