A lot of people were expecting David Tennant to return as the Doctor for only one more episode of Doctor Who, but it looks like he’ll be back for a total of three special episodes.
Just in, we have a new trailer revealing the three upcoming 60th anniversary specials that will star Tennant and his other returning companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate). Watch this:
As revealed by the trailer, the specials are The Star Beast, Wild Blue Yonder, and The Giggle. We don’t know which episode will finally introduce Ncuti Gatwa’s version of the Doctor, but it could be nice just to see Tennant fool around for a bit before we get the regeneration that will bring Gatwa to the fold.
Personally, I was kind of hoping that Jodie Whittaker would be the one to introduce Gatwa’s Doctor as is the traditional sendoff of past incarnations, but the show did manage to surprise a lot of audience members by bringing Tennant back; not to mention they also piqued the interest of old Whovians who probably haven’t been checking the show out since Matt Smith was still the Doctor.
I have no doubt that Gatwa will bring his own flavor to the character once he gets onboard, but I guess there’s no harm in having some nostalgia-fuelled episodes with Tennant and Tate once again running around on sci-fi adventures for old time’s sake.
No release dates have been revealed for the upcoming Doctor Who anniversary specials, but we should expect them to air on the BBC sometime later in the year.
