'Titans' Season 1, Episode 9 'Hank and Dawn' Recap: New Beginning

Remembering one’s purpose usually is a good thing, but there are always two sides of a situation. While two lives hand in the balance, one takes the time to recall the past. As memories come alive, the call of the present eventually reaches out, giving an urgent warning about the Titan‘s fate.

In this week’s episode of Titans, Hank Hall/Hawk (Alan Ritchson) recalls the past at Dawn Granger/Dove’s (Minka Kelly) bedside. Throughout the flashback, Rachel Roth/Raven (Teagan Croft) appears in Hank’s dreams, asking for their help.

The Hall brothers; Hank and Don (Elliot Knight) lived together in an apartment years after their mother’s death. Because of Hanks injuries incurred while playing for the football team, Don intervened to have Hank sit out the finals. Their argument sparks a brawl in the library which caused their expulsion. However, their dropping from school made them take up the names Hawk and Dove, taking sexual offenders, just like Hank’s former Coach Vincent (Trevor Hayes).

Before Dawn met Hank, she was a ballerina. However, Dawn had a problem. Her mother, Marie Granger (Marina Sirtis) decided to move back in with her abusive husband. The mother and daughter spent much time together before Marie had to head to London. While they walked, they bump into Hank and Don. Suddenly, a van at high speed ran straight into their direction, killing Don and Marie.

Grief

Hank and Dawn’s paths converge again when they go to a grief group which included the accident’s victims’ families. Eventually, the two of them get along and fall in love. When Dawn learns about Hank’s troubling past, she decides to help him deal with it. Dawn heads to Coach Vincent’s house and tells him to admit what he did to Hank. Just as Coach Vincent reaches for a gun to shoot Dawn, Hank comes in. The duo makes him pay for the horrible things he did to Hank as well as other kids.

After this, the duo heads back to Hank’s apartment. In the vision, Dawn sees Rachel’s reflection on Hank’s helmet. Suddenly, Dawn gets out of her hospital bed and asks Hank to look for Jason Todd (Curran Walters). Rachel needed their help as soon as possible.

While this episode’s timing is a bit late, they pulled it off successfully. Highly emotional but surprisingly well-written, this chapter gave us a little bit more about Hank and Dawn, hinting that they could be regulars in the second season. Also, it smoothly set up what we could expect from the next episode.

Titans continues on Friday, December 14th at the DC Streaming Service.
