‘Titans’ Season 1, Episode 7 ‘The Asylum’ Recap: Identity
BY Daniel Rayner
Published 6 years ago
After a brief encounter with the new Robin, the Titans now try to figure out what the Organization wants. However, a bait they could not resist entices them, making them fall into a trap. Now, they must endure the horrors in the Asylum long enough until rescue arrives.
In this week’s episode of Titans, Dr. Adamson (Reed Birney) reveals that Rachel Roth/Raven’s (Teagan Croft) mom, Angela Azarath (Rachel Nichols) is alive. As she and Gar Logan/Beastboy (Ryan Potter) take the bait, Dick Grayson/Robin (Brenton Thwaites) and Koriand’r/Starfire (Anna Diop) follow after their trail.
Biological Mother
When Dick tells everyone about the information from Dr. Adamson, Rachel and Gar foolishly proceed to the Asylum. Knowing full well that it is a trap, Dick and Kory plan a strategy before heading to the location. However, Dick discovers that the two have left, so he and Kory immediately chase after them. As expected, the Asylum personnel capture Rachel and Gar. Also, they surrounded Dick and Kory, so the duo surrenders.
Horrors
While inside the Asylum, the team underwent cruel procedures. Gar was imprisoned in a cage and electrocuted. Meanwhile, the Asylum Doctor (Rachael Crawford) overdoses Dick with a hallucinogen, making him encounter his young self. On the other hand, a surgeon experiments on Kory strapped to the operating table.
Reunion
When Rachel regains consciousness, she has two things in mind: saving her mom as well as her friends. After rescuing Angela, Rachel frees each member of the team. Each of them goes on a rampage once set free: Gar makes his first kill, Dick beats an overwhelming amount of security guards, and Kory makes the place explode. Before they left, Dick burns his Robin costume, realizing that he must let that identity go.
‘Titans’ Season 1, Episode 7 ‘The Asylum’ Final Verdict
This episode is perhaps the one with the darkest themes. Here, we see each of them undergo gruesome torture at the hands of the Asylum personnel. Seeing Kory blow the Asylum up gave a dark but satisfying feel of vengeance. Also, Dick finally gives up the Robin costume (both symbolically and literally), marking the start of his transition into Nightwing. I hope to see his new suit in the next episodes.
Titans continues on Friday, November 30th at the DC Streaming Service.
