'Titans' Season 1, Episode 2 'Hawk and Dove' Recap: Old Friends

After escaping the clutches of a strange cult, our heroes look for a place to regroup. In the most desperate of times, the Titans have an unexpected reunion. As tensions rise between the once good friends, a strange family threatens the very person they are trying to protect.

In this week’s episode of Titans, Hank Hall/Hawk (Alan Ritchson) and Dawn Granger/Dove’s (Minka Kelly) vigilante lives changes suddenly when Dick Grayson/Robin rejoins them. Meanwhile, The Organization sends out the Nuclear Family to find and abduct Rachel Roth/Raven (Teagan Croft).

Four years ago, Hawk, Dove, and Robin used to do team-ups. Their trio was unstoppable, taking down any criminal that stood in their way. At present, Hank and Dawn are in a long-term relationship. Also, they continue to do vigilante work. However, Hank’s numerous injuries acquired after years of being a vigilante took its toll on them, forcing them to decide to retire after one last mission. Still, all of this changes when Dick suddenly gives them a visit.

Dick knew that he could not protect Rachel. At least, not yet. Because of this, he sought out help from his friends. After Rachel’s power goes out of her control once more, Dick’s resolve to have someone take care of her strengthens. Hank and Dawn, whom he eyes as Rachel’s potential guardians, need help as well. With Hank’s injuries and the difficulty set by their last job, they would need all the help they could get.

Hawk and Dove’s last job involved preventing an arms smuggler from sending out their guns to their clients. At first, it seemed that Robin’s intel on the forces guarding the shipment was wrong. However, one of the armed men shoots at Hawk, injuring him. Luckily, Robin arrives in time to save Hawk and Dove.

While Hawk, Dove, and Robin were out on a mission, Rachel stayed at Hank and Dawn’s apartment. As she looked around, she finds an envelope addressed to Hank and Dawn from Dick. The envelope contained money and a letter, entrusting Rachel to Hank and Dawn’s care. When the trio arrives, they search the apartment for Rachel. Dick finds Rachel on the rooftop, who hands him his letter. Finally, Hank reads the message, and the four of them argue with each other until suddenly, the nuclear family appears out of nowhere.

The moment that Nuclear Dad (Jeff Clarke) receives orders given by The Organization from The Messenger (Reed Birney), the Nuclear family dropped everything they were doing to go on a mission: abducting Rachel. Their first target was Dick’s partner, Detective Amy Rohrbach (Lindsey Gort) whom they tortured to find out where Dick is. Before any of them knew it, Hank, Dawn, and Dick lost Rachel to the Nuclear Family. The trio tried to fight them, but they were bitterly defeated. When the Nuclear Family left, Dick went to check on Dawn, who was thrown all the way down to the street. Unfortunately, Dawn was losing her breath when Dick arrived.

‘Titans’ Season 1, Episode 2 ‘Hawk and Dove’ Final Verdict

This episode is a great follow up to the pilot. Deciding to introduce Hawk and Dove was the right decision, and fans were undoubtedly thrilled to see more members of the original Teen Titans get featured. However, the Nuclear Family needed a better introduction. Perhaps we will know more about them and The Organization who sent them. It seems like every sizeable criminal element is after Raven, and The Acolyte from the previous episode was just the beginning.

Titans continues on Friday, October 26th at the DC Streaming Service.
