You wouldn’t think that The Santa Clause would spawn an entire film trilogy, but after The Santa Clause 2 and The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, Disney is now ready to come back to the story of reluctant Kris Kringle Scott Calvin.
According to Variety, Disney+ has greenlit a Santa Clause series with Tim Allen attached to reprise the role of Scott. The site synopsis reads:
In the series, Scott Calvin (Allen) is on the brink of his 65th birthday and realizing that he can’t be Santa forever. He’s starting to lose a step in his Santa duties, and more importantly, he’s got a family who could benefit from a life in the normal world, especially his two kids who have grown up at the Pole. With a lot of elves, children, and family to please, Scott sets out to find a suitable replacement Santa while preparing his family for a new adventure in a life south of the pole.
So far Allen is the only confirmed cast member for the upcoming series, but the show will be ran by Last Man Standing creator Jack Burditt.
While the original 1994 movie had Scott growing to accept his role as Santa Claus, the sequels had been about him trying to keep the job. Admittedly, the premise for the series does come from an interesting place, and it would be great to see what kind of character growth Calvin can have now that he knows he can’t work his dream job forever.
No release date has been announced for the Santa Clause series, but it’s possible that Disney could release it sometime in Christmas 2022.
