Marvel Studios has just dropped one of the much-awaited bombshells that fans have been waiting to see. The first trailer for “Thor: Ragnarok” has just dropped and fans are going crazy about it. The third Thor solo movie is among the most anticipated movies of the year, and for many reasons. The Taika Waititi-directed movie introduces Jeff Goldblum to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the destruction of Asgard is finally seen, Loki is back, and we just have to stop ourselves right there.
“Thor: Ragnarok” follows the titular character as he brawls with his friend from work (well, Hulk, obviously,) tries to prevent the end of Asgard, finds out about the Infinity Stones and the Infinity Gauntlet (which was one of the reasons why he left Earth at the end of “Avengers: Age of Ultron,”) and basically just fight his way through everything.
Thor: Ragnarok Trailer Breakdown
The “Thor: Ragnarok” trailer doesn’t underwhelm us when it comes to all the intense action that viewers can expect, with most of the new cast members being shown in the footage. It’s a good way for an introduction, with a “Guardians of the Galaxy” feel going on throughout the teaser. There are lots of spaceships flying around, humanoid aliens, and wide open astral spaces.
Hela’s introduction also messes with us as she ultimately was able to wield Thor’s hammer and freaking destroys it to pieces. Cate Blanchett’s character faces off with Thor at the beginning of the trailer, and just as he throws the Mjolnir to her, she catches it and smashes it to pieces with one hand. With. ONE. hand. Dear God.
It’s been debated that the Mjolnir might contain an Infinity Stone, but judging by what happens in the trailer, it’s confirmed that Thor’s trusty hammer won’t make it through the film. Hela is also a classic foe for Thor from the comics. She is the Asgardian Goddess of Death, ruling over Hel and Niflheim, the Asgardian version of hell and purgatory. She is greatly obsessed with taking over Asgard, so she wreaks havoc in Valhalla, starting her conflict with Thor and Odin. In “Thor: Ragnarok,” Hela is trapped in the afterlife until she is accidentally freed, taking out her anger towards Asgard as she makes sure she doesn’t return in the afterlife.
The Near Destruction of Asgard
We also see the destruction of Asgard as Hela covers it in a blanker of fire. Thor is in a race against time to stop the Ragnarok from bringing and end to Asgard, and the trailer clearly shows us how this is going to transpire. We also see a glimpse of Loki (who masqueraded as Odin at the end of “Thor: The Dark World,”) and for all we know, he might be the one who accidentally released Hela. He’s seen arriving in Asgard, and by the looks of it, he’s clearly enjoying this.
Other interesting revelations include Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Skurge (Karl Urban) and the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum). The last time we saw Valkyrie was when she got tired of her time in Asgard and left. She is then brought to the gladiator-like planet Sakaar run by the Grandmaster. This is where she decides to stay to work for the Grandmaster to look for fighters in his Coliseum, leading her to capture Thor and forcing him to the main event. Skurge, meanwhile, will team up with Thor (after fighting with him for so long) to stop the Ragnarok from inflicting more damage to Asgard. As for the Grandmaster, his role in “Thor: Ragnarok” is one of the key stories. The Grandmaster is one of the elders of the universe, but his exact origins are unknown. Famously known as a gambler and manipulator, he has ties to Thanos and could be one of the main players in “Avengers: Infinity War.”
A Thor and Hulk Team Up Has To Happen
Another awesome treat from the trailer is seeing the Hulk in his full armor sans Planet Hulk gear. After leaving Earth at the end of “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Hulk has somehow found his way to Planet Sakaar, also to work for the Grandmaster as one of his champions. The 2006 Planet Hulk comic story line has been greatly modified in the movie, and the Hulk armor is obviously an excuse to bring Thor and Hulk together. But in any case, we should at least see Hulk beat up aliens gladiator-style.
Thor’s helmet makes its first official debut on the big screen. After he was introduced in 2011, no helmet was present. Finally, we’ll be able to see Thor sport his famous comic book gear. It’s not really that essential to the character, but it serves as a great piece of history being represented on screen, with it being one of Thor’s iconic accessories. The film is sure to be a fun and massive Marvel adventure, and it’s a fair fan service to know that the studio is willing to bring some comic book story lines along for the ride.
“Thor: Ragnarok” hits theaters on November 3, 2017. Watch the trailer below:
