As “The Voice” Season 14 blind auditions continue, the coaches–Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Kelly Clarkson, and Alicia Keys–discover and meet aspiring singers with different personalities, song choices, and styles. There were some who didn’t make it to the next level, but there were a lot of participants who were able to be part of the battle rounds. Here’s a rundown of contestants who made it to the battle rounds.
Christiana Danielle
Christiana Danielle from Fort Wayne, Indiana sang Drake’s “Hotline Bling.” Although the song she chose would not perfectly suit a female voice, she excellently delivered an impressive performance. This is the reason why Kelly, Alicia, and Adam turned their chairs for her. She’s not just beautiful, but also got an incredible singing prowess. When asked why she chose that kind of song, she said that she loves jazz, soul, and country.
Kelly even forgot to ask her name due to excitement and amazement. Adam added that she is one of the greatest gifts in the show and that she is one of the best singers he ever heard in his life. But no matter what the two judges said and how much they convince her, Christiana chose Alicia.
Brett Hunter
Blake Shelton fell in love with the voice of Brett Hunter as he sang “She’s A Bad Mama Jamma” by Carl Carlton. Using his ukulele, he proved that he deserved to be part of “The Voice”–specifically in Blake’s team. The other judges might not have turned for him but rest assured, Blake will be an excellent mentor for him. Blake was thrilled that the three judges didn’t go for him to avoid any debate or any further discussion.
Jackie Foster
Kelly was disappointed and heartbroken when Alicia turned her chair for Jackie Foster, an aspiring singer from San Diego, California who sang “What About Us” by Pink. Jackie grew up classically trained in music, helping Jackie deliver her performance with a powerful voice and note accuracy. Alicia did her best to convince Jackie to join her team, but it seems that her effort was never enough against Kelly’s charm and convincing strategies. Well, Kelly deserved to have Jackie, since she was the first one who turned her chair for Jackie. Alicia just wasn’t fast enough to love the voice she heard.
Reid Umstattd
Choosing the right song is very important in any singing competition. This is why Reid Umstattd got the attention of the coaches and the audience with his rendition of Elton John’s “Take Me To The Pilot.” The song hasn’t been covered before but is mainstream enough to make an impact. Alicia and Adam turned their chairs for him, but he chose Adam who was apparently in love with his voice and who begged for him to join his team.
Jorge Eduardo
It only took five seconds for Kelly to turn her chair for Jorge Eduardo, a 24-year old guy from Los Angeles, California. He sang one of the most famous songs of this generation–Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito.” Jorge placed fourth in Mexico’s “La Voz” so it’s a good starting point for him, and he might also get the edge from other contestants as well.
Angel Bonilla, ‘The Voice’s” first transgender contestant
Gender identity is one of the most common social issues we have today. But thanks to Angel Bonilla from the Philippines, she a testimony of how a person should strive and fight for his or her dreams regardless of gender. Gay or transgender, it is true that in every single aspect of one’s life, it is not all about one’s sexual orientation–it’s all about talent, skills, and attitude that can make someone successful. Angel’s sexual orientation, didn’t hinder her singing talents and abilities and to be a part of Adam’s team. With the song ‘Lay Me Down’ by Sam Smith, she captured Adam’s heart and attention.
Johnny Bliss
Johnny Bliss commanded a four-chair turn and a block with his version of “Preciosa” by Marc Anthony. Kelly was reluctant at first but was surprised when she saw the word “BLOCK” right in front of her. Johnny must be very talented since Adam blocked Kelly! As a reminder, the BLOCK button can only be used once. Adam said that if he would have to get the chance to block everybody, then he would have done it. What makes Johnny extra special and unique among the other contestants was that he convincingly inspired Alicia to sing “If I Ain’t Got You” in pristine Spanish.
However, it was pitiful for Adam to see Johnny pick Alicia instead of Adam who used his only BLOCK ability for this season.
Austin Giorgio
The season wouldn’t be complete without a Frank Sinatra-slash-Michael Buble wannabe performing in the show. Austin Giorgo sang “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” by Marvin Gaye and was convincing enough to make Blake turn for him. Adam, however, said that he should learn how to balance his movements and singing because he didn’t hear what he was looking for, so he didn’t turn. It’s still a long way to go, so Austin has a lot of time to improve and practice for the next level of the competition.
Mia Boostrom
Mia Boostrom was lucky enough to get Adam’s attention, so even though something is lacking in her performance, she made it to the battle rounds. She sang “Pillowtalk” by Zayn Malik. Adam said that there’s serious potential in her, and he was lucky to have the opportunity to coach her.
Jamai
Jamai sang “U Got It Bad” by Usher, and despite the fact that he had a hard time reaching the low notes of the song, he got Alicia and Kelly interested. Alicia was stunned by his compelling variety and style while his high notes struck Kelly. She had trouble sealing the deal with him, however, so Jamai chose Alicia.
“The Voice” continues Tuesday at 8/7c on NBC.
