The Shrek World Returns in Latest Trailer for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

It’s been more than a decade since Shrek spinoff Puss in Boots came to theaters, and now we’re getting the sequel Puss in Boots: The Last Wish which is going in a very existential direction.

The movie is set to hit theaters this Christmas, and Universal has dropped a new trailer showcasing Puss and the other fairy tale characters that bring the world of Shrek to life. Check this out:

Here’s the synopsis:

For the first time in more than a decade, DreamWorks Animation presents a new adventure in the Shrek universe as daring outlaw Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for peril and disregard for safety have taken their toll. Puss has burned through eight of his nine lives, though he lost count along the way. Getting those lives back will send Puss in Boots on his grandest quest yet.

The movie features a quite the star-studded cast. Besides Antonio Banderas coming back to reprise the role of Puss, we also have Harvey Guillen (What We Do in the Shadows) and Salma Hayek as Perro and Kitty Soft Paws, joining Puss for the ride. Other stars include Florence Pugh (Goldilocks), Wagner Moura (The Big Bad Wolf), and John Mulaney (‘Big’ Jack from Jack and the Giant Beanstalk).

This is also just speculation on some fans’ part, but it’s possible we could get the return of Shrek and his family. Though the series seemed to have been lost in obscurity, Shrek still remains to be an internet darling, and Dreamworks would be crazy not to bank in on the character’s popularity pushing forward.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is set to hit theaters on Dec. 21.
