Previously on “The Royals,” London was left in total darkness and Liam (William Moseley) was losing his mind to get take down his brother. Now in “Black As His Purpose Did The Night Resemble,” everything is becoming clearer to Liam, despite losing a few battles in the process. Robert (Max Brown) has stepped up to be more than a ceremonial figure. Eleanor (Alexandra Park) has her princess mission, and Jasper (Tom Austen) gets a surprise visit from the past.
Darkness engulfs “The Royals.”
It’s safe to assume that Robert had something to do with the citywide blackout. But what followed was probably out of his hands. On his way back to the palace from the hospital, Jasper was caught up in an angry mob that left him alone and defenseless. But to his surprise, dear old dad came to the rescue.
Fearing for her boyfriend’s life, Len decides to venture into the darkness to look for Jasper. Fearing for his sister’s safety, Robert volunteered to look for him instead. Robert arrived, seeing an empty ambulance and a bridge closed to the people.
While waiting for her brother to arrive with her boyfriend, Len, Willow (Genevieve Gaunt), Rosie (Sarah Armstrong), and Sara Alice (Miley Locke) had an unconventional girl’s night in. With the powers the monarchy gave her, Len showed the people in darkness hospitality and comfort.
Liam heads over to Greta’s (Lily Loveless) apartment in hopes of a romantic evening to pass the time. But the darkness followed his life and was greeted with a drunk-sad Greta.
Helena (Elizabeth Hurley), on the other hand, is stuck in the cellar but was soon joined by Cyrus (Jakes Maskall) and her mother, who was supposed to be banished from the palace. With alcohol surrounding them, an intense game of truth or truth will let all the secrets come flying out.
An unwanted reunion
A gunshot ironically saved Jasper. When the mobsters were trying to flip the ambulance over, a single shot scared them away. The person behind the trigger was the last person Jasper wanted to see. His father (Richard Brake) beat Robert by a few minutes and swung the doors open. He aggressively pulled the gurney out, making Jasper bounce with it.
Jasper was, of course, against them working together to get back to the palace. But his injury proved him weak to travel on foot alone. So Jasper had no choice but to stay with his dad. Jasper allowed his dad to help under one condition—he would be entering the palace alone.
When they saw that the military had the bridge to the palace on lockdown, Jasper used his conman skills and passed through an underground Thames tunnel. Here, Jasper’s father had a lot of historical trivia to share about the place. Jasper was disappointed that his father did not use his knowledge for something legitimate and real.
Revelations come flying out here. In their conversation, it seemed like Jasper’s dad had a thing with Mandy, Jasper’s ex-girlfriend and “work associate.” This adds to the burning anger towards Jasper’s estranged father. Before he followed his son out, he calls out saying he’s got a new girl.
When they got to North London, the posh side of the city, this would be when they would separate ways. Seeing a suit that perfectly fit him, Jasper’s father was ready to throw a brick through the window to take it. Because of this, they start to talk again. Jasper’s dad defended why he raised Jasper the way he did. Jasper, however, was determined to not forgive for all the grief he gave him.
With that, Jasper left, and his father threw the brick at the window. Unfortunately for him, the window was made up of fiberglass, so the block just bounced back.
He’s not just a king
King Robert put his crown down and became a knight, metaphorically. Although he missed Robert at the ambulance, he showed the people what kind of king he is.
He knows there’s no chance of finding Jasper, so of course, he decides to head back home. But like the father and son before him, Robert sees the bridge closed with people rallying to get to the other side. As the King of England, it was no problem for Robert to walk through the people and right up to the military.
Robert stood before the people, in front of the men in uniform and gave an inspiring speech. He said the bridge was a symbol of the unification of the city when they rose above “troubled waters.” Robert asked the military to stand down and let them pass—and pass they did.
Girls night in
Before Robert left to save Jasper, he gave Willow strict instructions to keep the palace on lockdown. No one was to go or enter. But Len, with a heart of gold, saw people piling around their gates. Robert was out, Liam and Queen Helena were nowhere in sight. Since Princess Eleanor Matilda Henstridge is the ruling monarch in residence, she’s now in charge.
Willow and Rosie think letting strangers into the palace is a terrible idea. Sara Alice thinks they’re zombies. But even with three protesters, Len is determined to help these people. She unlocks the gates and lets them in.
The caviar and champagne that was only for the Queen’s luncheon were given out to the commoners seeking refuge in the palace. When James Hill (Rocky Marshall) saw what was going on, he gave up and just asked for a drink.
Liam’s world came crumbling down
With the intention of having a good time, Liam showed up at Greta’s. Instead of an eager smile and welcoming hug, a drunk Greta greeted him. Being the good man he really is, Liam still tried.
Liam cooked a steak dinner with whatever he could find. The candles made things more romantic. But romance was nowhere in their relationship. The food went to waste when Greta took off her shirt and sat on Liam’s lap. But there was no happy ending. Instead, Greta revealed that she knew Liam was using her to get to her father’s computer. After she whispered this in Liam’s ear, she sauntered away.
Liam, in shock, followed her after a while. With tears in her eyes and her voice cracking, she told Liam the story of how her father showed her the motion detectors and security cameras in his office. Greta added how her father looked sympathetic but was really rubbing her failure in her face.
Liam tried to explain his side, about him assuming his brother did something wrong. But Greta just calmly told him to leave.
Helena, Cyrus, and Duchie’s game of truth or truth
Helena was down in the cellar looking for a drink. But fortunately—or maybe, unfortunately—she wasn’t alone. Cyrus and the Grand Duchess of Oxford showed up. Given the history between the three of them, it wasn’t going to be a fun night.
With drinks all around and brilliant ideas from Cyrus, the past was dug up and secrets exposed. The three played “truth or truth” until the sun came up. Duchie said she didn’t mean to kill anyone and the resent Helena towards her mother bubble up again.
But the biggest reveal of the night was from Cyrus. He lost the crown, lost Violet, and he lost his cancer. The call he got the last episode before he threw the phone into to fire was confirmation that he was going to live. Cyrus’ disease is in remission, but he wasn’t happy about it. Helena got sentimental and said that her children were glorious in spite of her.
The light at the end of the tunnel
In the end, all was sort of well. Power finally came back, freeing Cyrus and Helena from the cellar. But they left the Grand Duchess Alexandra fast asleep. Robert marched toward the palace with the crowd right behind him, with Jasper absent from his side, breaking Len’s heart. However, the Princess made her mom proud of the decision she made to bring the people in the palace.
Len’s heart swelled up when she heard clapping and saw Jasper come in. Without a care about who was around and watching, they gravitated toward each other and kissed as if their lives depended on it. Now, everyone knows who the mystery girl in Jasper’s speech is.
After the whole ordeal with Greta, Liam realized some things. When he got home, he apologized for not telling him about his relationship with Kate. When Robert asked him if he still had feelings for her, Liam only said, “Yes.”
Robert’s day in the sun is just beginning in “The Royals.” When the prime minister called the King, Robert rubbed his victory in his face. The crowd cheering outside the palace strengthened the king’s point that he was not just a ceremonial figure.
Rising new loves
In the cellar, Duchie revealed that she had an Italian count lover. But of course, “The Royals” would wait until the end to show who it was. It turns out that the Italian count is Jasper’s father.
And it looks like Cassandra has some competition to be Robert’s bride. Willow wants to be back on the list after the heroism the king displayed on the bridge. But before they could lock lips, Rachel (Victoria Ekanoye) walks in and ruins the moment.
“The Royals” continues next Sunday, April 8th, with “There’s Daggers In Men’s Smiles” at 10/9c on E!
