'The Purge' Season Finale 'A Nation Reborn' Recap: The Siren

The Purge reaches its final hour. As the yearly holiday closes, a mission to save its potential victims embarks. Meanwhile, an armed group goes on a vendetta hunt. A particular brand of Purge Justice ensues despite their pleas. In the end, everything goes back to normal after the siren, or does it?

In the season finale of The Purge, Joe (Lee Tergesen) tries Rick (Colin Woodell) and Jenna Betancourt (Hannah Emily Anderson) in his Purge Court. Meanwhile, Pete The Cop (Dominic Fumusa) and Miguel Guerrero (Gabriel Chavarria) eliminate Rex (Christopher Berry) and his group before rescuing Penelope Guerrero (Jessica Garza).

Joe recounts Rick and Jenna’s faults while the couple sat together. Rick had to cut costs in his project, so he found and took advantage of a loophole in his contract with Joe. Because of this, Joe lost the rest of his arrangements. Despite Jenna not knowing about the deal, Joe still wanted to purge her.

However, since Rick asked him to spare her for the sake of their child, Joe gave Jenna a choice. Jenna has to shoot Rick so that she and her baby would be free. Jenna pulls the trigger, but nothing comes out. Suddenly, Paige (Kelly Murtagh) screams as Penelope held a screw against her neck. This distracted Joe as he opened the cage to deal with Penelope. After Penelope stabs Joe’s eye, the four of them escape into the hallways.

Before Pete and Miguel could reach the school, they had to deal with Rex and his men. Outnumbered, they opted to kill two of the men and then head to the school.  Still, Rex and his men pursued them. Thanks to Miguel’s training, they used one of Joe’s bombs to eliminate Rex and his men, all but one.

Pete and Miguel meet the Betancourts when they enter the school. Unfortunately, one of Rex’s men recover from the blast and shoot Rick. Pete was injured, too, so he decided to stay with the Betancourts. Moments later, Rick dies, telling Jenna to take their baby somewhere safe. Meanwhile, Joe pursues Penelope and traps her in the school’s swimming pool area. Just as Joe aims his gun at her, Miguel arrives, shooting at Joe.

Still, Joe puts up a fight. He tries to fight back at them when suddenly, the siren rings. As a law-abiding citizen, Joe gives Miguel his gun back and airs out his disappointment before telling them that he will end the next Purge with both Miguel and Penelope. Because of this, Miguel shoots Joe and then kicks him into the pool. When they meet Pete and Jenna outside, Pete discreetly agrees to keep Miguel’s actions after the siren rings a secret. A year later, Jenna moved to France. Also, Miguel and Penelope now devote their lives to saving people during Purge Night.

‘The Purge’ Season Finale ‘A Nation Reborn’ Final Verdict

This season’s final episode perfectly captures the essence of the first movie. Other than showing the time left before Purge Night ends, the events in this episode bring the rush and adrenaline that the characters experience to a maximum. Also, the sense of relief, in the end, is there, but just like in the movies, you would have a sense of anticipating what happens in the next Purge. Overall, this episode is an excellent end to the first season. Luckily, before this episode aired, the show got renewed for a second season, guaranteeing that we will see Pete, Penelope, and Miguel real soon.
