‘The Passage’ Season Finale ‘Last Lesson’ Recap: Prologue

The Passage takes us to events that follow a month after the Virals’ escape from Project N.O.A.H. Like any other outbreak; the virus quickly spreads in the main cities of the United States. Some vestiges of human settlements remain active and free of Viral presence, but all this may be temporary. With the cure remaining dormant in a cabin in the woods, the spread of the virus remains imminent.
In the season finale of The Passage, the surviving members of Project N.O.A.H. live their lives one month after Tim Fanning (Jamie McShane) and the other Virals’ escape. Brad Wolgast (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), Lila Kyle (Emanuelle Chiriqui) and Amy Bellafonte (Saniyya Sidney) live their lives in a remote cabin. Meanwhile, Clark Richards (Vincent Piazza) keeps Shauna Babcock (Brianne Howey) in check. Elsewhere, Lacey Antoine (Kecia Lewis) and Jonas Lear (Henry Ian Cusick) try to work on synthesizing a new cure.
Atonement
The first month after the outbreak was rough for Lacey and Jonas. Before they reached a Global Health Federation Outpost, they had to evade the Virals. Fortunately, Lacey and Jonas make it through the trip from Orlando, Florida to Fairfax, Virginia. Once there, Jonas wastes no time in trying to synthesize a cure. Despite Tim’s visits, Jonas manages to make a cure. However, he had a problem: he cannot test the treatment on a human. With the conference between World Leaders and the Federation ending bitterly, Jonas starts to lose hope. Seeing no other choice, Jonas decides to use the cure on himself. He did not have much to lose anyway.
The Deal
Thanks to Shauna, Clark survived the outbreak on Project N.O.A.H. However, his new life did not come without strings attached. Daily, Clark would drive to an inconspicuous building in Las Vegas. Once there, Shauna would feed on what Clark brought for her: a person charged with grave criminal activities. Their deal went on for about a month until Shauna decided that she is tired of it. Shauna felt less of a person and more of a monster in Clark’s eyes since he treated her that way. As a result, Shauna sparks the outbreak in Las Vegas. Not knowing what to do, Clark decides to kill Shauna, but ultimately ends up kissing her. All that Shauna wanted was for Clark to treat her like a person, and now he finally did.
The Family
The first thirty days after their departure from Project N.O.A.H. were the best that Amy ever had. Brad, Lila, and Amy lived in an isolated cabin. Despite this, they happily lived like a healthy family. Brad would take Amy fishing in the morning and then they would have their meals together. Their isolation did not necessarily mean that they had no friends since they were still within reach of a small survivor community.
A time came for Brad and Lila to go on a supply run. Outside the gas station, a Viral dropped a body on top of Brad and Lila’s van. However, the Viral did not go after Lila; instead, ran towards Brad. Surprised, Brad and a couple of survivors looked at the dead Viral, wondering how it withstood the sunlight. Ultimately, the encounter made Lila decide to join Doctors Without Borders. Since the Viral did not attack her, Lila thought that she would be able to help bring an antidote into existence with the use of her blood.
Lila’s departure sparked the end of their family. Brad regularly trained Amy to help her know how to live on her own. Despite not knowing what Amy’s role in the future would be, Brad continued to teach her. He took comfort in knowing that Amy will soon be able to survive without his guidance. Their family officially went separate ways when an infected friend of theirs, Bob, infects Brad. The two survivors from the town were about to shoot Brad when Amy stops them, killing them both. After giving Brad the cure, Amy ran away. Just as she did, Nuclear Bombs flew in the sky.
Ninety-seven years later, Amy would return, hardened by experience, strengthened by time.
‘The Passage’ Season Finale ‘Last Lesson’ Final Verdict
Undoubtedly, the show used this episode to prepare the setting for the next season. Nonetheless, the back-to-back airing of the last two chapters is a good decision on FOX’s part. However, there are some minor issues with regards to the plot. The protagonists, on multiple occasions, could have killed the virals. Also, the soldiers’ inability to shoot at least one of them accurately made the plot less believable. Still, a second season is undoubtedly something that this show deserves. If it does get one, then perhaps these plot issues may be avoided. Other than these stated criticisms, the finale was a good one. Each of the characters received proper closure, if not transitions, to their stories.
