‘The Passage’ Season 1, Episode 9 ‘Stay In The Light’ Recap: Viral Freedom

Published 6 years ago
The Passage to the apocalypse began when the Virals awoke. The door that keeps them locked will not hold much longer. Humanity’s reign on earth will now end. As the first twelve of the Virals claw their way out of 4B, what remains of Project N.O.A.H. tries to contain them— and fails.
In this week’s episode of The Passage, Brad Wolgast (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) protects Amy Bellafonte (Saniyya Sidney) the Virals. In their escape, Lila Kyle (Emanuelle Chiriqui) gets infected. Also, Dr. Major Nichole Sykes (Caroline Chikezie) stays trapped in the lab along with the cure, so Brad risks returning to 4B to save both Amy and Lila.
Tearing Through
Brad, Amy, and Nicole only had minutes to outrun the Virals. After freeing three soldiers and a civilian, they arm themselves and prepare for the worst. Horace Guilder (James Le Gros) watched as the Virals tore through the steel door that separated them, but they unexpectedly stop. Brad and the team knew better than to take the silence as a good sign. Hearing the virals crawl through the ventilation system, Brad and the group decide to make a run for the elevator. In the chaos, Brad loses almost everyone to the Virals. Anthony Carter (McKinley Belcher II) gets hold of and infects Lila, leaving Brad no choice but to go back for Nichole and the cure.
It Has To Be Me
Nicole did not expect Brad’s return, but when Clark Richards (Vincent Piazza) tells her about Lila’s infection, she understood. Going back is a risk that Brad is willing to take. Now, Brad and Nicole had a different problem. Guilder’s new security protocol system took time to reboot, so Brad and Nichole had to wait. As Guilder and Dr. Jonas Lear (Henry Ian Cusick) put pressure on Clark, he decides to have Nichole attempt to open the door manually. Luckily, Nichole’s effort works fine. Still, the Virals are after them, so Brad and Nichole found themselves standing inside Tim Fanning’s (Jamie McShane) former cell.
Upstairs, Guilder, Jonas, and Clark debated on initiating the Elizabeth Protocol. Elizabeth protocol is a contingency that Project N.O.A.H. made in the event of an outbreak. If launched, the Elizabeth Protocol will detonate the explosives placed on 4B. Jonas readily sets the program on standby, but Clark prevents him from pressing the button. While the tension grows between the three men, Amy takes matters in her hands and starts the countdown sequence.
Fortunately, Clark finds the blueprints of 4B and manages to locate a hidden access panel leading to the outside of the building. With the time running out, Nichole chooses to stall the Virals while Brad went up the ladder, bringing the cure with him. The bombs soon explode, taking the Virals and Nichole with it.
Forest Run
The Elizabeth Protocol did not work. Amy sensed the presence of the virals, and they started to surround the building. Since the Virals have no tolerance for the light, Clark and his team decide to use that to their advantage. Their team served as bait to lure and ideally kill the Virals while Brad, Lila, and Amy escaped the facility, bringing the cure with them. This strategy works, but the casualties grew with each step the team takes. As Brad, Lila, and Amy enter Lacey Antoine’s (Kecia Lewis) van, Shauna Babcock (Brianne Howey) looked at Clark, injured and lying at the bottom of a tree.
Redemption
Lacey made sure that none of the fallen soldiers turned into Virals. After walking past the carnage outside the facility, Lacey found Jonas, sitting on the staircase, contemplating suicide. However, Lacey convinces Jonas that the chance to right his wrongs is within his grasp. Outside, Shauna offers Clark a chance to recover his injuries and live his life with her.
The Passage continues with ‘Last Lesson.’
