‘The Passage’ Season 1, Episode 5 ‘How You Gonna Outrun The End of The World’ Recap: Breakout
BY Daniel Rayner
Published 6 years ago
The Passage of the world into chaos started slowly, and admittedly unexpected. The Virals welcome the latest addition to their fold. A bright, young Scientist seizes the opportunity to show off, but unfortunately meets the end of his career. Also, a brave duo reassesses their steps in bringing the truth out to the world before all is too late. Meanwhile, humanity’s only hope for survival finally gets the chance to break out of containment. As all hell breaks loose, a long lost love reunites, under the least favorable circumstances.
In this week’s episode The Passage, the Virals’ escape begins with a fatal mistake. Meanwhile, Dr. Major Nichole Sykes (Caroline Chikezie) helps Brad Wolgast (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) and Amy Bellafonte escape the facility. As Lila Kyle (Emmanuelle Chiriqui) and Lacey Antoine (Kecia Lewis) reevaluate their steps, Dr. Jonas Lear (Henry Ian Cusick) stays quarantined, unable to stop the facility’s meltdown.
The Calling
When Lacey and Lila’s attempt to expose Project NOAH ends sourly, they have no choice but to go off the grid. Since Lacey’s house is unsafe, their only option is to seek refuge in Lacey’s former convent. Once there, Sister Arnette (Susan Williams) reluctantly welcomes them. However, the illusion of safety does not last long. As Lacey and Lila reflected and prayed for Brad and Amy, someone abducts both of them. So much for staying out of reach.
Weaponizing Project NOAH
Just like any good soldier, Clark Richards (Vincent Piazza) wasted no time in following Director Guilder’s (James Le Gros) orders. Guilder wanted to meet Amy personally, thinking that she fits in his new agenda as the deputy director of the government’s department of special weapons. Despite Dr. Sykes’ disagreement, Clark makes the meeting happen, taking Brad away from Amy. Fortunately, Dr. Sykes has a change of heart. After successfully taking Amy out of Guilder’s reach, Dr. Sykes helps Amy and Brad escape.
Clark finds out that Amy and Brad are missing, so he sends his troops to look for them. Before he left Brad’s interrogation room, Shauna Babcock (Brianne Howey) appears and reveals Amy and Brad’s hiding place. However, this would not be their primary concern. Clark should have heeded Shauna’s warning: a Viral made it out of the containment cells and is on the way to freeing the others.
Overeager Genius
Dr. Daniel Pet (Alain Uy) wanted to impress Director Guilder. Theorizing that he could manipulate the Virals’ telepathic connection, he experiments on one of them, Winston (Brett Gentile). At first, Winston complies, making Dr. Pet think that he made a scientific breakthrough. However, when it was time to present his findings to Director Guilder, Winston remained unresponsive. Dr. Pet made the grave mistake of going to Winston alone. Before he initiated the telepathic connection, Winston started talking to him, controlling his physical body to unlock the restraints as well as the door. It was too late for Dr. Pet. Dr. Lear could do nothing but watch from inside his quarantine cell as Winston bit Dr. Pet.
Superhuman Feats
After Clark’s men place Brad in an interrogation room, they knock him out. In Brad’s dream, Anthony Carter (McKinley Belcher III) gives him a warning. Neither the Virals’ breakout nor Dr. Tim Fanning (Jamie McShane) should be Brad’s concern. Instead, Anthony instructed him to prepare Amy for her transitioning period. At this point, Amy could read minds and run exceedingly fast. The formula will continue to manifest in Amy, and sooner or later, she will have to face what all virals faced.
Finally, Dr. Sykes arrived to take him to where she hid Amy: the blood cooling room. There, Amy showed another superhuman feat: she can withstand cold temperatures. When the staff finally change shifts, Amy and Brad make their move. However, Amy’s superhearing kicks in. Just as she warns Brad, Winston attacks him. Amy’s supersonic scream throws Winston away from Brad. After this, Amy faints into Brad’s arms.
A Lost Love
During Dr. Lear’s time in quarantine, Dr. Fanning did nothing but try to mess with his mind. Before Jonas went into isolation, he brought his wife, Elizabeth Lear (Jennifer Ferrin) to the facility. Knowing this, Tim decided to hound Jonas about his failure to cure his wife as well as his failure as a husband. Tim’s memories with Elizabeth further fueled his desire to have her join him. Fortunately, Jonas knew better than to give in to Tim’s psychological warfare. Still, Tim managed to control Lawrence Grey (Jason Fuchs) and send him to Elizabeth’s room. By the time Jason made it out of the quarantine cell, it was too late. Lawrence gave Elizabeth the Viral Formula that may have cured her current illness but sealed her fate as one of Tim’s Virals.
‘The Passage’ Season 1, Episode 5 ‘How You Gonna Outrun The End of The World’ Final Verdict
As expected, the Virals finally make it out of the facility. Now, it is only a matter of questioning who survives Project NOAH’s meltdown. Also, Brad and Amy are now in a race against time. At the rate of how the Viral Formula manifests itself in Amy, her transitioning period may come sooner than we think. With the Virals on the loose, the duo should waste no time in heading to Dr. Sykes’ trusted friend.
The Passage returns Monday, February 18th with ‘I Want to Know What You Taste Like’ at 9/10c on FOX.
